EAQAN, a network of quality assurance practitioners in East Africa held its fifth Regional Forum in Limuru, Kenya on May 4-8, 2015. Over 120 participants from universities in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Burundi and Rwanda attended the forum. This consisted of quality assurance practitioners, vice chancellors and deputy vice chancellors, executive members of national accreditation bodies and the Inter-University Council for East Africa (IUCEA).
The objectives of the forum were to:
- Build capacity of QA officers through expert led training workshops on QA issues in higher education
- Disseminate best practices on QA from the region through sharing of research and scholarship by QA officers
- Network and garner support for HE quality from senior university management
The forum was officially opened by the Kenyan Cabinet Secretary for Education, Science and Technology Prof Jacob Kaimenyi.
Dr. Tashmin Khamis, Director of AKU Networks for Quality Assurance and Improvement and Teaching & Learning, is the current president and hosted the conference in collaboration with Commission for University Education Kenya, which was supported by the IUCEA, DAAD (The German Academic Exchange Service) and HRK (The German Rector’s Conference). AKU, as part of the secretariat, was commended for its leadership in enhancing quality of higher education in the East African region including on enhancing teaching quality.
Under the theme “Enhancing Quality in Higher Education to Strengthen the Student Learning Experience” the forum provided a unique and an important opportunity for AKU faculty to showcase the work that we are doing in quality, teaching and learning.
AKU contributed to the conference through faculty presentations on sharing best practices and running a workshop on engaged teaching by Dr Jane Rarieya, Assistant Director, TL_net.
