The Aga Khan University (AKU) and Rahat Kada Hospice, Karachi, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to strengthen palliative and end-of-life care services in Pakistan. The agreement formalizes collaboration in training, capacity-building and patient support, with a focus on improving access to compassionate care for those with life-limiting illnesses.
Under the partnership, AKU’s specialist faculty will provide structured training in palliative care to healthcare providers at Rahat Kada Hospice. The initiative aims to enhance clinical skills in pain and symptom management while reinforcing holistic, patient-centered approaches to care.
The MOU also creates opportunities for AKU trainees to undertake rotations at Rahat Kada Hospice as part of their community-based hospice training. This experiential learning will allow students and residents to gain practical exposure to end-of-life care in a dedicated hospice setting.
A key component of the collaboration is a shared commitment to equity. The agreement will facilitate the transition of financially challenged and underprivileged patients from AKU to Rahat Kada Hospice for end-of-life care, ensuring that eligible patients receive comprehensive hospice services free of cost. Through this partnership, both institutions aim to strengthen palliative care capacity while promoting dignity, comfort and support for patients and their families.
