It is with deep sadness that the Aga Khan University mourns the passing of a cherished friend, Dr J. Robert Buchanan, on December 22, 2025. A Founding Trustee of AKU and a distinguished leader in health care and academia, Dr Buchanan’s contributions left a lasting mark on the University.
Dr Buchanan was appointed to the Board by AKU’s Founding Chancellor, His Late Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan. He went on to serve as a Trustee for 31 years, the longest trustee tenure in AKU’s history, providing exceptional leadership and strategic guidance. During his time at AKU, Dr Buchanan played a central role in upholding high standards of quality and governance. His commitment to these principles helped translate the Founding Chancellor’s vision into practice and continues to inform the University’s work today.
Trained in endocrinology, Dr Buchanan began his career in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, serving in Korea immediately after graduating from medical school. This experience sparked a lifelong interest in health care education and delivery at regional, national, and international levels, and set the course for a career dedicated to strengthening academic and health institutions.
Dr Buchanan’s career included senior leadership roles at several prominent health care and academic institutions. He served as General Director and CEO of Massachusetts General Hospital, Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, and President of Chicago Hospital and Medical Centre. At the time of his passing, he was General Director Emeritus of Massachusetts General Hospital. He also held senior roles at Cornell University Medical College and the University of Chicago.
Dr Buchanan was widely regarded as a national authority on health care administration and served on numerous state and national bodies, including the Association of American Medical Colleges, the Liaison Committee on Medical Education, the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, and the China Medical Board of New York, which he chaired for more than a decade.
At AKU, Dr Buchanan made pioneering contributions to the University’s academic and health systems development. As the founding Chair of the Board’s Governance and Health Services Committees, he provided strong leadership during the formative years of the institution. His impact is still evident in the strong international reputation of AKU’s Medical College, School of Nursing and Midwifery, and health network, institutions he helped develop and which are widely regarded among the region’s leaders.
Dr Buchanan was a generous supporter of the University and helped shape a collegial and effective Board culture, which till today plays a very important role in bringing together an international membership to crystallize and dialogue for AKU’s governance.
In recognition of his service, AKU’s Founding Chancellor honoured Dr Buchanan with the naming of the J. Robert Buchanan Lecture Hall in the Medical College courtyard of AKU’s Stadium Road campus in Karachi and later the J. Robert Buchanan Professorship in Teaching with Technology for the Director of AKU’s Centre for Innovation in Medical Education. Dr. Buchanan was also named Trustee Emeritus in 2011, and over the course of his career received honorary degrees from Amherst College, Cornell University Medical College, Rush Medical School, and Peking Union Medical College.
Dr Buchanan’s leadership, counsel, and pursuit of excellence strengthened Aga Khan University’s ability to serve communities and improve regional health and education. He will be deeply missed. He is survived by his son, Ross Townsend Buchanan, and two granddaughters, Elise Van Ness Buchanan and Erin Carver Buchanan.
