The Aga Khan University (AKU) and the Department of Health (DoH), Government of Sindh, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen services at the District Headquarters Hospital (DHQ), Tando Allah Yar. Supported by the Aga Khan Maternal and Child Care Centre (AKMCCC), Hyderabad, this collaboration aims to enhance the quality and safety of healthcare delivery under the ongoing Essential Package of Health Services (EPHS) Tando Allah Yar Project.
The MoU signing took place at the office of Sindh Health Minister Dr. Azra Pechuho, with Dr. Mairaj Shah, Chief Operating Officer, Aga Khan University Hospital, and Mr. Jamshed Alam, Special Secretary, Health Department, Government of Sindh, representing their respective institutions.
Through this partnership, AKU and the Department of Health will work together to improve patient safety, infection prevention and control, medication management, and clinical support services at the DHQ hospital. The AKMCCC Hyderabad team will provide hands-on training, mentorship, and opportunities for knowledge exchange to strengthen district-level health systems and promote safe, high-quality care.
The EPHS Tando Allah Yar Project serves as a pilot initiative for implementing the Sindh Essential Package of Health Services, a framework developed to advance universal health coverage across the province. Led by the Sindh Department of Health and funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the project brings together several implementation partners, including the Community Health Sciences Department at AKU, PPHI Sindh, ThinkWell, and Acasus.
This collaboration highlights AKU's commitment to improving healthcare delivery through research, capacity building, and technical expertise, while aligning with the Government of Sindh's goal of strengthening district-level public health services. The lessons learned from this initiative are expected to guide future efforts to scale up the Essential Package of Health Services across Sindh and beyond, ensuring accessible, safe, and equitable care for all.
