Over 250 residents of Nakawa Division received free health services during a medical camp organized by the Aga Khan University (AKU), in partnership with the Aga Khan University Hospital. Held on July 11, 2025, at the University's newly constructed Nakawa campus, the initiative was part of an Open Day designed to connect with the community and future students.
The medical camp was a key highlight of the Open Day, an event that offered prospective students, parents, and community members a unique opportunity to explore AKU's academic offerings. Visitors learned about various programmes, including the newly introduced Bachelor of Nursing Science-Direct Entry programme, gained insights into admission requirements, and experienced the vibrant student life at AKU.
Dr Joseph Mwizerwa, Associate Vice Provost at Aga Khan University, emphasized the events significance. “This Open Day is a chance for prospective students, parents, and the general public to understand what Aga Khan University offers from rigorous academics to a vibrant student community and innovative research. It has been purposefully staged here to give our stakeholders, partners, and the wider community a firsthand experience of the newly completed Nakawa campus ahead of its grand opening." He added.
Beyond academic exposure, the free medical camp provided comprehensive health screenings and consultations. Services included blood pressure and blood sugar testing, BMI assessments, dental and eye check-ups, and health education and counselling.
“Most of the cases we examined today were non-communicable diseases, including diabetes and high blood pressure. We also treated peptic ulcers. The results indicate a growing burden of lifestyle-related conditions in our communities," noted Diana Namubiru Ssewanyana, Director of Aga Khan University Hospital, Uganda.
Residents warmly welcomed the initiative, with many receiving both treatment and free medication. Susan Namakula, a local resident, expressed her gratitude: “This is a great gesture. For such a reputable university and hospital to open their doors to the community shows a commitment to being good neighbours. We have been examined, advised, and now we better understand how to manage our health."
Paul Mugambe, Mayor of Nakawa Division, lauded AKU and the hospital for bringing critical services closer to the people and for inspiring educational ambition among the youth. He urged the University and hospital leadership to make the medical camp an annual event, highlighting the positive impact on the community.
During the Open Day, visitors also toured the state-of-the-art Nakawa campus, including modern hostel facilities and the Nakawa Clinic. This immersive experience further reinforced AKU's mission of academic excellence and its commitment to community-centred service.
