Three of Aga Khan University’s (AKU) residency programmes in East Africa have been accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education International, (ACGME-I).
The programmes - Anesthesiology, Family Medicine, and Pathology (Clinical and Anatomic), have received new accreditation this year effective July 1, 2024, while the Internal Medicine programme, the first residency programme in Africa to be accredited in 2022, has received its reaccreditation.
In addition, the Aga Khan University Medical College, East Africa received its institutional reaccreditation following its initial accreditation in July 2020 by ACGME-I.
This brings a total of seven accredited residency programmes at AKU by ACGME-I – Internal Medicine, Paediatrics & Child Health, Radiology & Diagnostic Imaging and Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Anesthesiology, Family Medicine, and Pathology (Clinical and Anatomic).
While commenting on the recent accreditation, Prof Lukoye Atwoli, Dean, Aga Khan University Medical College, East Africa said: “AKU strives for excellence and this achievement is a testament to the international quality standards of our institutional set-up and the programmes we offer. We attribute this success to the dedication and efforts of our colleagues who have worked tirelessly to ensure that all our procedures and documentation are of the highest standards.”
ACGME-I is a global accreditation body that verifies medical education institutions, as well as their postgraduate programmes for residents and fellows, to ensure that they meet the highest academic standards.
“The accreditation means that our training programmes at AKU can be benchmarked and measured against the best global residency programmes,” added Prof Atwoli.
Accreditation is accomplished through a comprehensive peer review process and is based upon established international standards and guidelines. The purpose of the accreditation preparedness assessment visit is to evaluate the sponsoring institution, and the residency programmes. This process not only evaluates the programmes but also improves public recognition of the programmes and sponsoring institutions graduate medical education.
