Mutoni Suhamu, a graduating Nursing student from Uganda, has overcome numerous obstacles to pursue her education at the Aga Khan University School of Nursing and Midwifery, East Africa (SONAM EA). Her journey is one of resilience, strategic planning, and the unwavering support of those around her.
Like many students, Mutoni faced financial constraints that made the idea of studying at AKU seem out of reach. “I wasn't sure how I would afford the tuition or travel expenses," she recalls. But instead of giving up, Mutoni developed a comprehensive savings plan, budgeting for tuition, travel, and living expenses. In addition to her disciplined approach to saving, Mutoni turned her passion for baking into a side business, selling pastries to support her dream.
Balancing work and studies was another challenge. As a full-time employee at BAW Pharmacy and a locum nurse at TMR International Hospital, Mutoni had to be disciplined in managing her time. “I made sure to plan my days well, balancing work, family, and studies," she shares. This careful time management helped her succeed academically while fulfilling her professional and personal responsibilities.
Mutoni also found strength in the community at AKU. She collaborated with peers who were facing similar struggles, and together, they created a strong support system. “We shared study tips, motivated one another, and reviewed each other's work. It was a team effort," she reflects.
In addition, Mutoni sought guidance from current AKU students and faculty, who helped her navigate both theoretical and practical courses. “The support was invaluable. It helped me understand what the market is looking for and how I could position myself in my career," she says.
Now, as a graduating student, Mutoni looks back on her AKU journey with deep gratitude. “AKU has shaped me into a more resilient and driven individual," she shares. Her story serves as a beacon of hope for students facing similar challenges, showing that with determination, strategic planning, and support, no dream is too big.
For prospective students, Mutoni's advice is simple: “Take the first step and apply. The journey may be tough, but the rewards are priceless."
