It is with profound sadness that we at the Aga Khan University School of Nursing and Midwifery (AKU-SONAM) announce the passing of Ms Winnifred Warkentin, the founding Director and visionary leader of the School, originally known as Aga Khan University School of Nursing (AKU-SON).
From 1979 to 1988, following the vision and guidance of our Chancellor, Ms Warkentin's laid the foundation for AKU's nursing programme - the first higher education nursing academic unit in Pakistan. Since then, the School has expanded to provide nursing and midwifery education in Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania while growing its reach in Pakistan. Ms Warkentin's leadership attracted a diverse global pool of talent, creating a legacy of excellence that has shaped nursing and midwifery education for generations.
A devoted educator, Ms Warkentin's impact extended beyond curriculum development. She transformed the lives of countless students who have, in turn, elevated healthcare standards worldwide. Among them is Dr Salimah R. Walani the current Dean of AKU-SONAM – a graduate of the Class of 1987. Dr Walani stated “Ms. Winnifred Warkentin created something that has influenced thousands of lives, particularly that of young women and their families.
Dr Sulaiman Shahabuddin, President of AKU, also paid tribute, stating, “AKU will always remember and be grateful for Winnie's immense contributions to the development of nursing at AKU. She is fondly remembered by her students and all who had the privilege of knowing her."
In recognition of her extraordinary contributions, AKU awarded Ms. Winnifred Warkentin the prestigious Award of Distinction in 1999.
Ms Warkentin passed away peacefully at the age of 88 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Her compassionate spirit, leadership, and her lasting influence on nursing education will be cherished and remembered by all at AKU and beyond. We extend our deepest condolences to Ms Warkentin's family, friends, and the countless individuals whose lives she touched. Her legacy remains alive at AKU.
