“In the initial days of my career as a secondary school maths teacher, I got a chance to be mentored by an alumna of the Institute for Educational Development (IED). For the first time, someone had made me question my own teaching practices and challenged my understanding of the subject.
"Not only did she make me reflect on my strengths and weakness but she also ignited my curiosity to learn more so that I could teach better. That curiosity made me develop a long-term association with IED beginning in 1998 as a participant of a certificate programme. I then went on to complete my MEd in 2000 and my PhD in 2011, all from IED."
Dr Munira Amirali, over a 20-year career as an educator, has taught and mentored thousands of maths teachers. Her passion to spark interest in maths teaching has grown with time. She translates her passion into action by conducting hands-on continuing professional education programmes that help teachers enhance their understanding of the subject and learn novel techniques of teaching maths. Her programmes for teachers are filled with purpose, passion, excitement, innovation and reflection which she ultimately wants to trickle down to children in the classroom.
Recognition of her work led to Dr Amirali being asked to serve as a national expert on the design of the BEd (Hons) mathematics curriculum, under the aegis of the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan, in 2012. She drew upon her doctoral and regular research to develop this curriculum.
More recently, in 2018, she was asked by the Sindh government to lead the revamp of the mathematics syllabus for Grades I-X in the province.
