Two AKU-SONAM alumni, Ms Mary Najjuma and Ms Harriet Nayiga were selected as “Star Nurses and Midwives” by Nursing Now Uganda. They were two of four nurses who were celebrated for their immense contributions to nursing and midwifery in the country.
Nursing Now is a three-year global campaign that aims to improve health by raising the profile of nurses and midwives to enable them to maximize their contributions to achieving Universal Health Coverage.
Ms Mary Najjuma currently works with Victoria Hospital UMC in Bukoto and serves as a young nurse representative in Nursing Now Uganda’s steering committee. Additionally, she pioneered a project on non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and through this initiative, Ms Najjuma and seven colleagues organize missions to screen clients for NCDs, provide health education and make relevant referrals. They also developed The Emblem, a magazine to mentor and educate young nurses and midwives. The first issue was released in September 2018 by Uganda’s Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Dr Diana Atwine.
In response to the news that she was recognized as a star nurse, Ms Najjuma said, “…I was overjoyed and challenged at the same time to work harder in the pursuit of my dream… [I want] to see more passionate, confident and highly empowered young nurses and midwives, giving excellent service and solving real-time, present-day health care challenges with great impact.”
Ms Harriet Nayiga, who was recognized as a star midwife is the founder and director of Midwife-led Community Transformation (MILCOT), a Ugandan local charity organization that aims to connect midwives and locals in Wakiso district. They provide evidence-based sexual and reproductive health education, life skills and counselling to youths to prevent teenage pregnancies.
A former instructor of the two honourees, Professor Grace Edwards, shared that she was “…delighted to hear that two of the stars are our recent graduates... As well as being very proud, I was delighted with the response from other top nurses and midwives who praised the quality and achievements of AKU-SONAM.”
The rest of AKU-SONAM joins Professor Edwards in congratulating Ms Najjuma and Ms Nayiga on their outstanding achievements!
