​Theme: Empowering educators: Building transformative and inclusive educational ecosystems in East Africa and beyond​

Conference sub-themes 

Sub Theme 1: T​eacher Professional Development/Learning and Empowerment.

The numerous reforms in curriculum and teacher professionalization in the East African region has turned the spotlight on teachers and their role in the provision of quality education. This subtheme calls for presentations in the following areas:

  • Innovative teacher development practices and models 

  • Teachers as users, drivers of technology for enhanced teacher and/or student learning

  • Teachers and curriculum implementation – successes, possibilities, and constraints

  • Policy impact on teacher professionalization 

  • Teacher well-being.


Subtheme 2: Managing Educational Policy and Curriculum Reforms

This theme will address the critical role of school or institutional leadership in managing educational change broadly and policy and curriculum changes specifically in under resourced educational contexts in Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania. Under it, presenters will share their experiences on:

  • Implementing policy and/or curriculum reforms in specific contexts

  • Challenges and opportunities in implementing curriculum reform

  • Innovative approaches aligned with the broader goals of inclusivity and transformation in East African education.


Subtheme 3: Innovative teaching, learning and assessment models and practices

This subtheme seeks to explore innovative assessment models and practices to improve learning outcomes in the context of competence based curriculum implementation. Topics to be covered under this subtheme will include:

  • Innovative models and practices in assessment

  • Assessment and ICT

  • Linking Assessment, learning, and learning outcomes

  • Assessment and feedback

  • Assessment in the context of CBC


Subtheme 4: Gender, diversity, and disability inclusion in education 

Under this theme, presenters will share ways of creating inclusive and equitable educational systems that consider the unique needs of diverse teachers and learners considering under the following:

  • Implementation and accountability of inclusive policies at national and institutional levels  

  • Impact of gender-responsive pedagogy, inclusiveness in curriculum and assessment 

  • Inclusive education models and practices for learners with disability

  • Best practices and success stories from institutions that effectively implement gender, diversity, and disability inclusion strategies


Subtheme 5: Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and digital literacies integration in education

Presenters will share innovative models and practices in the following areas of technology use in education:

  • Digital pedagogies

  • Digital literacy 

  • Inclusivity, equity and diversity in technology integration 

  • Ethical and safe use of technology in the era of fast technological advancement 


Subtheme 6: Leading educational change

This subtheme focuses on the role of school leaders and leaders of other educational institutions in managing schools and institutions during disruptions. Presentation will showcase innovative models and practices in the following areas:

  • School and/or college leadership 

  • Pedagogical leadership

  • Leadership in gender and disability inclusion

  • Leadership in ICT integration

  • Leadership in mentorship and coaching

  • Empowering educators for educational leadership


Subtheme 7: Researching educational policy and practice

This subtheme underscores the critical role that research plays in educational transformation. Presenters will examine the following: 

  • Research for educational policy and practice in the context of East Africa

  • Teacher education classroom practices in teacher education

  • Emerging evidence on CBC implementation and practice

  • Best practices and success stories in ICT integration in education

  • Evidence from gender and disability focussed research  





Submission Guidelines

Abstracts should be between 250-300 words. Arial font size 12 in 1.5 spacing and APA style 7th edition referencing

Posters should be 150cm by 150cm. Text and graphics must be visible from 3 meters away

Workshops should be interactive and hands-on

Power point presentations font size 44 headings and font size 28 and above body text


Submission Timelines

Abstract submission deadline: November 13, 2023 

Notification of acceptance: December 15, 2023

Full paper submission: February 15, 2024

Final paper for publication: May 31, 2024​
