AKU opens healthcare simulation centre in Nairobi

Kenya’s president Uhuru Kenyatta inaugurated the new, 33,000 square foot Centre for Innovation in Medical Education, CIME, at Aga Khan University’s University Centre in Nairobi on June 11.

The Centre is the University’s second simulation-based education centre and will build on the success of the CIME in Karachi which was inaugurated in 2017. In January 2020, CIME in Karachi became South Asia’s first simulation-based educational institution to be accredited by the US-based Society for Simulation in Healthcare, SSIH, demonstrating that it met the highest standards in simulation-based education.

Clinical Simulation Leadership Programme

The first Clinical Simulation Leadership Programme was delivered in CIME, by the CIME team to a select group on March 8-9. This was in response to demand within our network, as we are recognised leaders within Pakistan. Participants included university and hospital strategic decision makers and the course was constructed to inform their thinking on the planning, designing and operating of new healthcare simulation centres that are springing up around the country. Ten leaders from four organisations participated in this programme: The University of Lahore, Pakistan Air Force, Dow University and Deneb Corporation.

Workshop on paediatric diarrhoea management

CIME and the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health joined hands with the Sanofi Pakistan to provide general practitioners with the relevant knowledge and skills to effectively manage childhood diarrhoeal illness in the community.

Preparing master trainers in neonatal resuscitation programme

The AKU’s Department of Paediatric and Child Health in collaboration with CIME and under the direction of Dr Shabina Ariff and her team, developed a train the trainer model to train all health professionals working in the paediatric service line.

Training of trainers

​​A simulation-based training of trainers programme on prevention and management of pressure injury was held at CIME. This programme aimed to engage master trainers in the coaching of new trainers that are less experienced to equip them with the required skills and knowledge in this area.

Bench to bedside learning for medical students

The transition of undergraduate medical students from pre-clinical to clinical years is an exciting yet daunting process. In order to make this transition smooth and less stressful, we provided medical year III students with an opportunity to practice their skills and knowledge in a safe simulated environment without the hesitation and fear of harming patients.

Simulation course for AKUH secondary hospitals

A simulation-based course was designed and offered to the AKUH secondary hospitals (Garden, Karimabad, Kharadar and Hyderabad) to improve the competency of their staff in the domain of maternal and child health.

To prepare the receptionists for the various contexts that they may encounter in the real world, the Nursing Education Services (NES) in partnership with CIME conducted the AKU’s first-ever simulation-based orientation sessions.

Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator

Our heartiest congratulations to Dr Mehak Rajani, Simulation Education Advisor, CIME for becoming a Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE). She joins a select few simulation educators in Pakistan to have achieved this recognition from our accrediting body, the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH). We are delighted by her achievement and her significant contribution towards furthering the excellence in healthcare simulation at AKU.
