Ms. Shagufta Hassan
Vice President, Finance and Chief Financial Officer
As Vice President Finance and Chief Financial Officer for the Aga Khan University (AKU), Ms. Shagufta Hassan oversees all financial affairs of the University and its healthcare system across six countries. She is responsible for the University's operational and financial strategy, planning and budgeting, finance and corporate governance functions.
Ms. Hassan has over 35 years' experience in leadership and senior management positions in both the public and private sector. Prior to her work at AKU, Ms. Hassan worked with A.F. Ferguson (PricewaterhouseCoopers) and The Institute of Business Administration. She was also an instructor for the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Pakistan, the Institute of Chartered Certified Accountants, UK and the Chartered Institute for Management Accountants, UK.
Ms. Hassan joined AKU in 2003 and has since held numerous positions including Interim Chief Executive Officer of the Aga Khan University Hospitals, Chief Operating Officer for AKUH Outreach Network and Director of Finance, Pakistan.
Amongst her significant achievements is the development and implementation of a growth strategy for AKU's Outreach Health Network across Pakistan. Under the leadership of Ms. Hassan, AKUH Clinical Laboratories became the first in Pakistan to be accredited by College of American Pathologists (CAP), a global gold standard in lab testing. Ms. Hassan also successfully led the Health Services operations of AKUH Pakistan through the first two waves of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In her voluntary capacity, Ms. Hassan is a Temporary Advisor for the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region. Ms Hassan is serving as a member of the Patients' Behbud Society (PBS) for AKUH and a member of its fund-raising committee. She is a Trustee of The Aga Khan University (International) in the United Kingdom (AKU-UK); A Board Member for the Aga Khan Health Services, Pakistan, a member of the Aga Khan Development Network CEO Forum; she has also served as a Trustee of the Aga Khan Ismailia Charitable Trust.
Ms. Hassan has been recognised nationally and internationally with numerous awards: Lifetime Achievement Award, Institute of Chartered Accountants of Pakistan (2021); Pioneering Woman Leader Award, World Women Leadership Congress (2020); 100 Most Impactful Healthcare Leaders Award, World Health and Wellness Congress (2019); Women Leadership Excellence citation, presented by the World Women Leadership Congress & Awards (2019); Top 100 Best Performing CEOs, CEO Club Pakistan (2017); Women's Achievement Award, Institute of Chartered Accountants, Pakistan (2017); and, Pond's Miracle Woman Award, Pond's Institute (2017); Nominated as a Champion Combatting Gender-Based Violence by the US Consulate in Pakistan (2017).
