1. What is the Master of Education programme?

The Master of Education (MEd) programme is a two-year full-time course designed for teachers and educational leaders seeking to improve the standard of education in their environment.

2. What are they key characteristics of the AKU-IED, EA programme?

  • Key characteristics of this programme include:
  • student learning focus: you will have the opportunity to practice
  • independent learning so that you can prepare for lifelong learning;
  • field or workplace focus: you will work with participants and teachers in and out of classrooms in a variety of schools or other workplace settings;
  • school improvement focus: as a graduate returning to the field you will work as a 'change agent' in your sponsoring school and/or school system;
  • reflective practice focus: you will engage in action research and maintain reflective journals to track your practice and improvement;
  • constructive critique focus: you will learn and develop a critically questioning stance towards your own practice and to all knowledge;
  • collaborative processes focus for teaching and learning: you will work cooperatively with colleagues in a variety of educational settings to gain an understanding of the benefits of such collaborative approaches.

3. Can I specialise in a particular area of study?

There are two tracks in the MEd programme. At the end of the first semester you can select your area of specialty from these two tracks:

  • Teacher Education
  • Educational Leadership & Management

4. What kind of skills and knowledge can I gain after completing this programme?

As a graduate of the MEd programme you will have developed the following skills and attitudes:

  • strong and lifelong commitment to educational change;
  • broad understanding of significant issues in education and a thorough knowledge in the area in which you specialised;
  • leadership skills to initiate and support improvement in school education, classroom teaching and participant learning;
  • ability to analyse critically, communicate effectively and adapt to diverse people and environments;
  • a desire to participate in reflective practice, lifelong learning and educational improvement
  • become an inspiring leader in education as a class room teacher or in any other capacity;

5. How long will it take to complete this programme?

The Med is a two-year programme divided in four semesters. Each semester students must enrol in at least four courses. Each semester will earn four units of credit and students must earn 16 units to graduate from the programme, including 4 units from the dissertation.

6. What are the compulsory courses I must take to complete this programme?

The core courses required for all participants in the MEd programme are:
