SEHAT CURRICULUM -Health Action Schools
Health education and promotion play a crucial role in ensuring quality education in primary schools in Pakistan, as demonstrated by the Health Action Schools (HAS) project led by Dr Tashmin Khamis at AKU-IED. Initiated as a three-year action research project (1998-2001) in collaboration with Save the Children, UK, HAS aimed to create prototypes of health-promoting schools across diverse contexts in Pakistan, starting with five pilot schools in Karachi. The project focused on enhancing teachers' skills through ongoing training and classroom support, which improved students' health knowledge and self-esteem. The pilot project's success in teacher development prompted national and regional expansion, influencing policy and practice in health education. The project resulted in the creation of a health education curriculum, materials, and a Child-to-Child resource center at AKU-IED.
