Family Medicine

Postgraduate Medical Education

We offer specialist training in Family Medicine leading to the award of a Master of Medicine (MMed) degree. Family medicine is the medical specialty of first contact with the patients and is devoted to providing preventive, promotive, rehabilitative and curative care with emphasis on the physical, psychological and social aspects, for the patient, his family and the community. The scope is not limited by system, organ, disease entity, age or sex.

Trainees are exposed to a wide range of clinical problems and are offered the opportunity to acquire skills in a variety of procedures with a team-based approach to patient care. The four year long programme offers clinical training in family medicine and other medical subspecialties. The courses/rotations include:​

  • General Medicine

  • General Surgery

  • Obstetrics and Gynaecology

  • Paediatrics

  • Principle and Practice of Family Medicine

  • Practice of Urban-based Family Medicine

  • Practice of Community-based Family Medicine

  • Practice of Rural-based Family Medicine

  • Research

  • Electives

Continuing Medical Education

The department in collaboration with the Department of Education provides continuous professional development for faculty and technical staff associated with the Aga Khan University in East Africa and Aga Khan Hospital in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania and it associated Primary Medical Centres.  

Faculty

Family Medicine is an academic department composed of health care professionals dedicated to teaching, research, service, and the advancement of the discipline of Family Medicine, locally, nationally, and internationally. We have highly qualified members of faculty in the department who have been involved with well recognised national and international bodies such as the Kenyan Association of Family Physicians (KAFP), American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), World Organization of Family Doctors (WONCA), Royal College of General Practitioners – United Kingdom (RCGP-UK), East African Family Medicine Initiative (EFMI) and Primafamed.

Clinical Hospital and Regional Services

Currently, Family Medicine Services are being offered at the Family Medicine Centres at both Aga Khan Hospital – Dar es Salaam, Tanzania and Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi, Kenya.
