Paediatrics and Child Health

Postgraduate Medical Education

The department of Paediatrics and Child Health hosts a four-year residency-training programme based at the Aga Khan University Hospital. Each year three residents are selected to join this programme following a rigorous standardised process, with a resultant full complement of 12 residents. The selection process involves administration of a broad based multiple-choice test it is only after passing that at a previously standard set level does one proceed to a face-to-face interview. At commencement of training, new residents undergo orientation into university and departmental operations to help them prepare for their new role.

A detailed residency-training manual is provided to each residenct upon commencement of residency. The manual provides curriculum and syllabi details as well as guidance regarding work based, formative and summative assessments. The manual also provides guidance regarding responsibilities and expected conduct during residency.

Numerous learning and practice opportunities are provided throughout residency. Structured, facilitated, student-centered tutorials are held several times each week. All faculty are subspecialists who guide residents during tutorials that are geared towards enhancing a thorough understanding of the practice of Paediatrics and Child Health. Participation in on-call duties, clinical ward rounds, and outpatient subspecialist clinics provides an opportunity for practical hands–on training experience. To promote mentorship and a team approach to client services, medical officer interns and nurses are actively encouraged to participate in clinical ward rounds. This also serves to promote understanding of evidence-based approach in training and practice.

Conferment of a Master of Medicine in Paediatrics and Child Health degree requires successful completion of coursework, summative examinations, and a dissertation. Marking of dissertations and summative assessment involves both local and international examiners to promote highest possible standards and ascertainment of exit competencies.

Continuing Medical Education (CME)

The department provides an opportunity for all involved in clinical service to participate in continuous medical education. A dedicated two-hour session is held every week during which broad ranges of issues relevant to the practice of Paediatrics are discussed. Presentations by various local and international experts are frequent. CME sessions relevant to the specific subsections of the department are also hosted each week.

All staff are encouraged and supported to undergo continuing emergency care training on regular basis and participation in professional and scientific fora locally and overseas to enhance knowledge and maintain high standards of clinical practice to the benefit of residents and clients.
