Aga Khan University is a unique hybrid: an institution of academic excellence that is also an agent for social development. A leading source of medical, nursing and teacher education, research and public service in the developing world, the University prepares men and women to lead change in their societies and to thrive in the global economy. AKU's research initiatives focus on some of the world's most pressing problems and aim to deliver real benefits to the affected communities.
The Aga Khan University is an autonomous, international institution of distinction, primarily serving the developing world and Muslim societies in innovative and enduring ways. To this end, the Vision of the Institute for Global Health and Development is to be the lead institute for global health and development research and action focusing on the communities served by AKU in Asia and Africa.
AKU is inspired by Islamic ethics, humanistic ideals and the philosophy of the Aga Khan Development Network. The Institute will uphold these values while committing to building an environment that fosters intellectual freedom, distinction in scholarship, pluralism, compassion, and humanity's collective responsibility for a sustainable physical, social and cultural environment.
In addition to these values, AKU's aspirations remain focused on:
- Impact – solving problems facing millions of people.
- Quality – meeting high international standards and inspiring others to do the same.
- Relevance – producing research with useful applications and graduates with needed skills.
- Access – serving our communities regardless of financial and geographic barriers.
