Fluorescence-Activated Cell Sorter (FACS) Core Facility

Fluorescence-Activated Cell Sorting (FACS) of living cells separates a population of cells into subpopulations based on fluorescent labelling. Cells stained using fluorophore-conjugated antibodies can be separated based on fluorescent recognition using specialised lasers.

FACS can be used to carry out many functions including:

  • High-speed cell sorting
  • Apoptotic assays
  • Cell cycle analysis
  • DNA analysis

The FACS Core Facility at AKU-CRM is equipped with the most advanced and state of the art cell sorters that include:

  • BD FACSAria III SORP (Special Order Research Product), and
  • BD FACSMelody

BD FACSAria III

BD FACSAria III can perform multi-parameter flow cytometric analysis with high throughput cell sorting. The equipment currently is capable of doing 9 colours and up to 4-way sorting. It is accompanied by BD FACSDiva software for analysis.

BD FACSMelody

BD FACSMelody can perform multi-parameter flow cytometric analysis and cell sorting. The equipment currently is capable of doing 6 colours and up to 4-way sorting. It is accompanied by BD FACSChorus and BD FACSDiva software for data acquisition and analysis respectively.
