Pathology

Postgraduate Medical Education

We offer postgraduate specialist training in Anatomic Pathology and Clinical Pathology, with both streams leading to a Master of Medicine (MMed) degree. Programmes are student-centered, problem-based, integrated, community-oriented and systematic. Our well resourced academic and teaching environment offers graduates the opportunity to develop as medical practitioners and bio-clinical researchers by engaging in scholarship, research and clinical practice. Both programmes are four years in duration.

The Anatomic Pathology programme comprises:

  • Histopathology

  • Cytopathology

  • Forensic Pathology

The Clinical Pathology programme comprises:

  • Chemical Pathology

  • Haematology

  • Medical Microbiology

Immunopathology and Molecular Pathology are common to both programmes.

Continuing Medical Education

We also provide continuous professional development for technical staff and to the medical fraternity associated with Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi (AKUH, N).

Faculty

Our outstanding faculty is dedicated to offering the highest quality instruction, research and scholarship. Our faculty sits on well recognised national and international bodies such as the National Bioethics Committee and the first Global Forum on Bacterial infections. The Department also provided support towards the establishment and inauguration of the College of Pathologists of East, Central and South Africa (COPECSA) and members of our faculty have been appointed to the first COPESCA Council.

Research

Research is an essential component of our academic programmes. Our Department is currently involved in research focusing on areas including Infectious Diseases, Non-communicable Diseases and Oncopathology. In the field of infectious diseases, research has primary focus on pulmonary tuberculosis and HIV. Improved capacity in immunohistochemistry and flowcytometry has enhanced research in the area of onco-pathology, especially non-Hodgkins Lymphoma and haematological cancers.

We are also establishing research collaboration in the field of Diabetes Mellitus and the broad area of Metabolic Syndrome.

Clinical Hospital and Regional Services

As a part of AKUH, N, our Department provides a full range of diagnostic services in all branches of pathology and is the reference laboratory not only for all the Aga Khan Health Services associated hospitals, but also for several public and mission hospitals within the East African region.  The laboratory also serves a network of AKUH, N outreach centres located in various parts of Kenya.
