Admission Criteria​


Under its charter, Aga Khan University is open to all academically qualified candidates. The University is non-denominational and admission to its academic programmes is needs-blind and based strictly on merit. 

Applications for the September 2020 cohort are now closed.  

Candidates wishing to apply for the MA in Muslim Cultures must complete an application form, including a personal statement, giving their reasons for wishing to enrol in the MA Programme and send it with a copy of their degree and transcript(s). Please note that referees should submit the references directly to the Education Office, no later than 31 January 2020 (at 12 noon UK time).  Shortlisted candidates will be asked to participate in an interview.​


To​​ be considered for admission to the MA Programme, applicants are required to hold the following:​

  1. ​An undergraduate degree (equivalent to a UK bachelor’s degree) with an award equivalent to an upper second class honours or better, from a university accredited or recognised by UK NARIC, preferably in the humanities or social sciences.

  2. English Proficiency Requirement:

    • ​​​​​​​​​IELTS for UKVI (Academic) - Overall band score: 6.5 (with a minimum of 5.5 in all four components).​​​​​​​

    • In accordance with UK visa rules, the Institute exempts candidates from the English language proficiency requirements if they ha​​ve completed undergraduate studies taught in the following countries: Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, the Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Canada, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, New Zealand, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Gren​adine​s, Trinidad and Tobago, The United Kingdom and The United States of America.​

UK NARIC, the British a gency which has responsibility for advising on comparability of qualifications, has confirmed that the AKU-ISMC's MA in Muslim Cultures is comparable to a British Masters and to level 7 in the UK Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF). 

UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI)

AKU-ISMC holds a UKVI  Tier 4 Sponsor Licence. This Sponsor's Licence permits AKU-ISMC to issue a confirmation of acceptance for studies (CAS) to prospective students. A CAS is required for any non-EEA international student seeking to obtain visa entry clearance to the UK.​​
