Cardiology 



The paediatric cardiology department at the Aga Khan University Medical College, East Africa is a unit that is geared towards establishing itself to provide tertiary level of care for children with complex congenital and acquired heart diseases from all parts of Kenya and East Africa.  

The section of paediatric cardiology provides high quality, evidence-based care to children suffering from cardiovascular pathology, both congenital and acquired and follow a multi-displinary approach in taking care of patients as well as their families. ​

Our out-patient services run daily. The paediatric cardiology is set to embrace all kinds of subspecialties and services within the cardiac field including cardiac imaging, cardiac catheterization, electrophysiology and surgery which are all vital in the management of paediatric cardiovascular diseases.​

Education and Research

Apart from therapeutic goals, the department of paediatric cardiology is involved in training and research programs. Currently, our training involves medical students pursuing a paediatric residency training at Aga Khan University, Nairobi, and training is expected to extend further to undergraduate students and nurses working within the department. 

The paediatric cardiology department focuses training in the diagnosis, management, treatment and prevention of pediatric cardiovascular diseases based on the core curriculum in pediatric cardiology set by the institution. Apart from structured weekly classes, bedside teachings as well as ward rounds centered around various cardiac cases, is a key learning strategy that the department embraces. 

Education of faculty and other medical providers on evidence based cardiovascular medicine is an important aspect within the department of pediatric cardiology.

The faculty also act as key supervisors for residents' dissertations, case reports and abstracts as well as poster presentations.

Patient Care

The department of paediatric cardiology strives to ensure excellent care to children suffering from congenital and acquired heart diseases and extending our multidisplinary care to patients' families.​

Some of the services that our department offers include:

  • A daily outpatient cardiac clinic.

  • Prenatal fetal and early postnatal echocardiography.

  • Cardiac imaging diagnostics including 3D/4D echocardiography, cardiac CT and cardiac MRI.

  • A state-of-the-art cardiac catherization laboratory to cater for patients requiring invasive procedures.
