Haematology Faculty

The section of Haematology has three full-time faculty who provide a vast array of services related to blood disorders and blood cancers, including the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of such conditions. It strives to provide the highest standard of clinical haematological care and treat a broad range of benign and malignant haematological disorders both on in-patient and out-patient basis.

Dr Anne Mwirigi, MBChB, BSc (MedSci), FRCPath
Assistant Professor 

Dr Anne Mwirigi is a Consultant Haematologist and an Assistant Professor at Aga Khan University Medical College, East Africa. 

As section head of haematology, she strives to deliver a high standard of haematology care to patients, in addition to having a governance and education mandate. She is clinical lead for the Haematology Multidisciplinary Tumour Board and the Departmental Monthly Mortality and Morbidity meeting as well as convening the monthly Grand Rounds and Journal Club. She is also a member of the Undergraduate Medical Education Committee.

Dr Mwirigi is keen on high quality clinical care and clinical research, as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications and local service improvement projects. Her interests include malignant haematology, specifically acute myeloid leukaemia and myeloma, as well as transfusion services.

Dr Mwirigi obtained her intercalated degree BSc (MedSci) in 2000​ and her MBChB degree at the University of Glasgow in 2002. After completing MRCP PACES in 2007, she underwent Specialist Registrar Training at King’s College Hospital and Guy’s & St Thomas’ Hospitals in London, attaining the FRCPath in 2012. She received her Certificate of Completion of Training from the London Deanery in 2014. 

She is Fellow of the Royal Society of Physicians (Edin), MRCP PACES examiner and Fellow of the Royal Society of Pathologists. She is also a member of the Kenya Society of Haematology and Oncology (KESHO), Kenya Society of Thrombosis and Haemostasis​ (KSTH), Royal College of Pathologists (RCP) and ​British Society of Haematology​ (BSH).

Prof Riyat Malkit, MBChB, MRCPath, FRCPath​
Associate Professor 

Prof Riyat is an Associate Professor in the Department of Hematology-Oncology, at the Aga Khan University Medical College, East Africa. He completed his MBChB from the University of Nairobi in 1978 and obtained his fellowship in hematology from the UK in 1987. Due to his expertise in the field of blood transfusion, was appointed a core member of the team to develop the National Policy on the guidelines for the appropriate use of blood and blood related products by the Ministry of Health, Kenya.  He was also appointed a member of the Task Force to develop National Guidelines for Cancer Management and Palliative Care by the Director of Public Health and Sanitation, ​​Director of Medical Services, Ministry of Health, Kenya.

Dr Riyat has authored multiple publications in peer reviewed journals as well as many abstracts and has served on the editorial board of multiple peer review journals.  He has been instrumental in graduate medical education, developing the curricula for the clinical pathology residency programme and served as the first programme director in Department of Pathology (2005 to 2012) when the residency programme was initiated at the Aga Khan University in Nairobi. 

Prof Riyat is a member of the Kenya Medical Association, European Hematology Association and American Society of Clinical Oncology.

Dr Laura Kirui, MBChB, MMed​, MRCP, FRCPath
Senior Instructor

Dr Laura Kirui is a Consultant Haematologist, in the Department of Haematology-Oncology at Aga Khan University Medical College, East Africa.

She is an alumni of Leeds University, School of Medicine and completed her specialist training in Haematology at University College London Hospital. She is a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists, UK, a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (Edin) and an examiner for MRCP PACES. 

Her interests include malignant haematology such as lymphoma, leukaemia, multiple myeloma, and benign haematology. She is the clinical lead for Haemostasis and Thrombosis at the Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi and is passionate about improving patient access and understanding in bleeding and clotting disorders. In her role, she is expanding the coagulation service, with dedicated clinics and specialist laboratory testing. Dr Kirui is the clinical lead for inpatient and outpatient services within the department and is dedicated to improving the patient experience through quality care. ​​

She is an active member of both the Kenyan Association of Physicians (Nairobi Branch) and the Kenya Society of Haematology and Oncology (KESHO).​
