Message from the Chair

At Aga Khan University (AKU), we offer quality undergraduate medical education which is student-centered. We guide our students through their studies by giving didactic lectures and practicums, just sufficient to give them a good grasp of the subjects. We do not overload them with such lectures. Instead, our students are trained to apply and integrate knowledge learnt in the classroom and laboratory by being exposed to challenge- or case-based peer-to-peer, student-directed learning activities. These teach them early on to think through different clinical scenarios using their basic Biomedical Science knowledge. This way, our students learn early, how to work with colleagues, to collaborate with one another and with other medical specialists. They begin to learn and understand the value of teamwork as no physician can survive as an island.

“It is this very knowledge that makes us doctors” - Dickson B.L. et al (2020)

Biomedical Sciences is where students learn the scientific bases of medical and surgical practice; it is also where they begin to identify with the ethos of this great profession. In this department, comprising Anatomy, Medical Biochemistry, Pharmacology and Human Physiology, we give students a sound foundation on which to build so they can join the proud group of AKU medical graduates providing innovative care not only in East Africa, but the world over. Our Faculty are dynamic, passionate and seasoned academics who treat students with dignity while impacting in them the desired knowledge, ethics and skills to help achieve their goals.

“This day, let us make a sound beginning, for what we have hitherto done is naught.” -  Thomas Kempis

Accordingly, what these young boys and girls had earlier achieved was great for the purpose of getting them here; but what they accomplish as our students in AKU is greater.

I look forward to receiving the new cohort as they begin a new phase in their journey to excellence; they could not have made a better decision than to have that journey here at AKU Medical College.
