Dr Abdulkarim Abdallah
Associate Professor

Dr Abdulkarim Abdallah is an Associate Professor and Chair, Department of General Surgery at Aga Khan University Medical College, East Africa. Dr Abdalla is an accomplished surgeon with extensive training and expertise in gastrointestinal surgery and trauma. He earned his MBChB from the University of Nairobi in 1992, followed by a Higher Diploma in Surgery from the College of Medicine of South Africa in 2001. He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland (FRCS) in 2002, the Royal College of Surgeons of England (FRCS) in 2016, and the American College of Surgeons (FACS) in the same year.

Dr Abdallah specializes in gastrointestinal surgery and trauma, with a strong passion for medical education and mentorship.

He is an active member of several esteemed professional organizations, including the Royal College of Surgeons in England, the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, the American College of Surgeons, the College of Medicine of South Africa, the South African Gastroenterology Society (SAGES), and the Surgical Society of Kenya.


Dr Asad Raja
Professor

Dr Asad Raja a Professor of General Surgery at Aga Khan University Medical College, East Africa. Dr Raja is a highly experienced surgeon with a strong background in gastrointestinal and laparoscopic surgery. He obtained his MBBS from the University of Karachi, Pakistan, in 1980 and later pursued advanced training, earning his FRCS from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1985. He further enhanced his expertise with a Master of Health Sciences (MHSc) from the University of Toronto, Canada, in 2002.

Dr Raja specializes in gastrointestinal cancer surgery, laparoscopic surgery, and trauma care. He is also deeply committed to surgical skills development, contributing to the training and advancement of future surgeons.

He is an active member of the Society of Surgeons Kenya, the International Association of Bioethics, and the Society of Surgeons of Pakistan, where he continues to engage in professional development and surgical education.


Dr Miriam Mutebi
Assistant Professor

Dr Miriam Mutebi is an Assistant Professor, Department of Surgery at Aga Khan University Medical College, East Africa. She holds an MBChB from the University of Nairobi (2004) and an MMed in Surgery from Aga Khan University (2012). She pursued a Breast Surgical Oncology fellowship at the University of Cape Town, Groote Schuur Hospital (2013-2014) and later earned a Master of Science in Clinical Epidemiology from Weill Cornell University, New York (2016-2018). She further specialized through a Graduate Surgical Oncology Fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering, New York.

Dr Mutebi is a co-founder of the Pan African Women's Association of Surgeons and serves on the board of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC). She is the President-Elect of the African Organization for Research & Training in Cancer (AORTIC) and the President of the Kenya Society of Hematology and Oncology.

Additionally, she chairs the Commonwealth Taskforce for the Global Elimination of Cervical Cancer. She is an active member of several professional organizations, including the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), the American Society of Breast Surgeons, the American College of Surgeons, the Surgical Society of Kenya, the American Association of Cancer Research, and the Association of Medical Educators.

Her key areas of interest include women's cancers, surgical care in Africa, and health systems research.

 

​Dr Mukuhi Ng'ang'a
Assistant Professor

Dr Mukuhi Ng'ang'a is an Assistant Professor, Department of Surgery at Aga Khan University Medical College, East Africa. She is a highly trained surgeon with a specialization in breast surgical oncology. She completed her fellowship in Breast Surgical Oncology at Maimonides Medical Center in New York.

Dr Mukuhi holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Education from the University of Edinburgh and earned her Master of Medicine (MMed) in General Surgery with honors from the University of Cape Town, South Africa. Additionally, she is a Fellow of the College of Surgeons of South Africa and obtained her MBChB from the University of Nairobi.

She is a member of several esteemed professional organizations, including the American Society of Breast Surgeons (ASBrS), the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), and the Society of Surgical Oncology (SSO). She is also a member of the Surgical Society of Kenya (SSK) and The Colleges of Medicine of South Africa (CMSA), where she continues to contribute to advancements in surgical oncology and medical education.

Her primary areas of interest include breast cancer, women's health, and medical education.


Dr Mustafa Musajee
Senior Instructor

Dr Mustafa Musajee is a Senior Instructor, Department of Surgery at Aga Khan University Medical College, East Africa. He is a vascular and endovascular Surgeon with extensive training and experience. He earned his MBChB from the University of Nairobi in 2003, followed by an MMEd in Surgery from the same institution in 2013. He attained Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in Vascular Surgery (FRCS) in 2021.

Dr Musajee specialized training includes a Lower Limb Fellowship at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Trust/King's College London (2020-2021) and a Renal Access Fellowship at Brighton and Sussex University Hospital (2021). Additionally, he served as an International Surgical Training Fellow at the Royal College of Surgeons, England, from 2017 to 2019.

He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (FRCS, Eng) and an active member of the Surgical Society of Kenya, the Vascular Society of Great Britain and Ireland, and the European Society of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery.

Dr Musajee's is areas of interest includes aortic surgery, lower limb revascularization and limb salvage, iliofemoral deep vein thrombosis (DVT), and deep venous reconstruction. He is passionate about advancing vascular surgery in Sub-Saharan Africa, conducting research on vascular diseases in the region, and contributing to the creation of a vascular registry to improve patient outcomes.


Dr Peter D. Ogutu

Assistant Professor

Dr Peter Ogutu is an Assistant Professor, Department of Surgery at Aga Khan University Medical College, East Africa. Dr Ogutu earned his Doctor of Medicine in Human Medicine in 2003, followed by a Diploma in Emergency Medicine in 2007 in Germany. He later specialized in Adult Cardiac Surgery, achieving his specialist certification in 2017.

Dr Ogutu's areas of interest includes cardiac surgery, conventional valvular surgery, coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), aortic surgery, and minimal access cardiac procedures. He is also experienced in transcutaneous aortic and mitral valve implantations (TAVI/TMVI), left ventricular assist device (LVAD) surgery, and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). In addition to his clinical work, he is actively involved in cardiac intensive care, emergency medicine, teaching, mentorship, and clinical research.

He is a member of several prestigious professional organizations, including the German Association of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery, the European Association of Cardiothoracic Surgery, the Bavarian Chamber of Physicians, and the Kenya Cardiac Society.

 

Dr Brian Misoi
Senior Instructor

Dr Brian Misoi is a Senior Instructor, Department of Surgery at Aga Khan University Medical College, East Africa. Dr Misoi has specialized training in general surgery. He earned his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) from the University of Nairobi in 2015 and later completed his Master of Medicine in General Surgery at Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi, in 2021.

His areas of interest include surgical oncology, gastrointestinal surgery, and minimal access surgery. He is also passionate about research and training in surgery, contributing to advancements in surgical techniques and education.

Dr Misoi is an active member of the Kenya Society of Haematology and Oncology (KESHO) and the Surgical Society of Kenya (SSK), where he engages in professional development and collaborative initiatives in the field of surgery.

Dr Edwin Mogere
Assistant Professor & Programme Director​

Dr Edwin Mogere is an Associate Professor of Neurosurgery at Aga Khan University Medical College, East Africa. He earned his MBChB from the University of Nairobi in 2003 before completing his Master of Medicine in General Surgery at Aga Khan University in 2008. He further specialized in neurosurgery, obtaining an MMed in Neurosurgery and an FCS from the University of Cape Town in 2014. Additionally, he completed a fellowship in neurovascular and skull base surgery at the University of Cape Town from 2013 to 2014.

His areas of expertise are in cerebrovascular disorders, including neuroendovascular therapy, as well as complex microsurgical and endoscopic treatments for skull base tumors. He is also deeply involved in neurocritical care and trauma management, playing a vital role in advancing neurosurgical care.

Dr Mogere is an active member of several prestigious organizations, including the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies, the Endovascular Society of South Africa, the Confederation of African Neurosurgical Societies, the International Society of Paediatric Neurosurgeons, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the Society for British Neurological Surgeons, and the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies. Additionally, he serves as an Associate Editor for the Endovascular section of the World Journal of Neurosurgery and is the Co-Director of the Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) program in Kenya.


Dr Beverly Cheserem
Assistant Professor​

Dr Beverly Cheserem is an Assistant Professor, Department of Surgery at Aga Khan University Medical College, East Africa. Dr Cheserem has a sub-specialty interest in skull base surgery and pituitary; both microsurgical and endoscopic techniques. Her other interests include global health, teaching and clinical research. Prior to joining AKU, Dr Cheserem was a Weill Cornell Global Health Fellow based at Muhumbili Orthopaedic Institute, Tanzania. She has also been a Skullbase Fellow, University Hospital of Wales, and Consultant Neurosurgeon, Brighton and Sussex University Hospital, UK. 

In addition, Dr Cheserem has completed rotations in various University hospitals in the UK. She completed her residency in Neurosurgery in the South London Neurosurgery Rotation and obtained her Bachelor of Medicine degree with Honours from the University of Southampton, UK.  Dr Cheserem has been a travelling fellow of Bellaria Hospital (Italy), Lariboisiere Hospital (France) and UPMC (USA).

Dr Cheserem has held several prestigious international leadership positions, including serving as Chair of the Kenya Association of Women Surgeons (2021-2023), Vice-Chair of the Scientific Committee of the Surgical Society of Kenya (2021-2023), and Vice-Chair of the Global Surgery Committee of the Surgical Society of Kenya (2021-2023). ​

She is also an active member of numerous professional organizations, including the Royal College of Surgeons of England (FRCS, Eng), the Association of Medical Educators (AOME) UK, the British Association of Surgical Oncology (BASO), and the Society of British Neurosurgeons (SBNS), UK. Additionally, she is a member of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS) and the Kenya Medical Association (KMA), contributing to advancements in surgical education, oncology, and neurosurgery on both local and international platforms.


Dr David Musyoka
Senior Instructor

Dr David Musyoka is a Senior Instructor, Department of Surgery at Aga Khan University Medical College, East Africa. Dr Musyoka is an ear, nose and throat (ENT), head and neck surgeon. He earned his MBChB from the University of Nairobi in 2001 and later completed his Master of Medicine in ENT from the same institution in 2009. Further advancing his expertise, he pursued a Head and Neck Fellowship at EDA Hospital in Taiwan in 2017.

His area of interest is the diagnosis and treatment of head and neck cancers, where he is dedicated to providing specialized surgical care. Dr Musyoka is an associate member of the Kenya ENT Association, actively contributing to the advancement of otolaryngology and head and neck surgery in the region.


Dr Abdulrauf I. Alhadad
Senior Instructor​

Dr Abdulrauf Alhadad is a Senior Instructor, Department of Surgery at Aga Khan University Medical College, East Africa. He obtained his MBChB from the University of Tripoli, Libya, in 2009 before pursuing specialized training in South Africa. He completed his FCORL Primary in 2014, FCORL Intermediate in 2015, and ultimately earned his Fellowship of the College of Otorhinolaryngologists (FCORL) from the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa in 2018. Additionally, he attained a Master of Medicine (MMed) in Otolaryngology from the University of Cape Town in 2019 and further specialized in Rhinology and Anterior Skull Base Surgery through a fellowship at the same institution.

His areas of interest include anterior skull base surgery, head and neck surgery, advanced rhinology, and general otolaryngology. He also has expertise in applying knowledge of computer databases and networks in medical practice.

Dr Alhadad is a Fellow of the Royal College of Otorhinolaryngologists and an active member of the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), the South African ENT Society, the Allergy Society of South Africa, and the Health Professional Council of Libya.

 

Dr Alain Zindamoyen M'bongo
Assistant Professor​

Dr Alain Zindamoyen M'bongo is an Assistant Professor, Department of Surgery at Aga Khan University Medical College, East Africa. He earned his MBBS from the University of Bangui (CAR) in 1998 and later completed his Master of Medicine in Ophthalmology at the University of Nairobi in 2005. Further advancing his expertise, he trained in Vitreo-Retinal Surgery at the European Vitreo-Retinal Training School in Bremen, Germany, in 2012. He then completed a fellowship at PCEA Kikuyu Hospital in Kenya from 2014 to 2016. In addition to his medical training, he pursued healthcare management studies, completing the Leading High Performing Healthcare Organizations program at Strathmore University Business School in 2014.

His key areas of interest include vitreo-retinal surgery and general ophthalmology, with additional expertise in paediatric ophthalmology and oculoplastics. He is also actively involved in healthcare management and administration, contributing to the development and leadership of ophthalmic services.

Dr M'bongo is a member of several esteemed professional organizations, including the College of Ophthalmologists of Eastern, Central, and Southern Africa (COECSA), the European Vitreo-Retinal Society (EVRS), the Vitreo-Retinal Society of Kenya (VRSK), and the African Retina Society (ARS). Through these affiliations, he continues to engage in research, training, and the advancement of ophthalmic care.​

Dr Hatem Mohammad
Senior Instructor

Dr Hatem Mohammad is a Senior Instructor and Section Head, Ophthalmonology, Department of Surgery at Aga Khan University Medical College, East Africa. He earned his MBChB from Cairo University, Egypt, in 1997, followed by a Master of Medicine (MMed) in Ophthalmology from the same institution in 2003. He further obtained the Fellowship of the European Board of Ophthalmology (FEBO) in 2007. In addition to his medical qualifications, he holds a Diploma in Health Care, Total Quality Management, and Patient Safety (HC-TQM), reflecting his commitment to improving healthcare standards and patient outcomes.

His key areas of interest include vitreoretinal surgery, refractive surgery, and general ophthalmology, where he is dedicated to providing high-quality eye care and advancing surgical techniques in the field.

Dr Mohammad is an active member of the Ophthalmology Associations of Egypt, contributing to the continuous growth and development of ophthalmic practice through research, education, and professional collaboration.

 

​Dr Mordicai Atinga
Assistant Professor

Dr Mordicai Ating'a is an Assistant Professor and Section Head of Orthopaedic Surgery, Department of Surgery at Aga Khan University Medical College, East Africa. He earned his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) from the University of Sheffield Medical School, UK, in 2003, following a Bachelor of Medical Science (BMedSci) from the same institution in 2000. He later obtained the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) in Trauma and Orthopedics (England) in 2015 and holds a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), demonstrating his expertise in the field.

His main areas of interest include shoulder and knee reconstruction, as well as sports injury management and arthroscopic surgery. He is dedicated to providing advanced surgical care to help restore mobility and function for his patients.

Dr Atinga is a member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and actively participates in professional associations, contributing to advancements in orthopedic surgery and medical education.

Dr Njalalle Baraza
Assistant Professor​

Dr Njalalle Baraza is an Assistant Professor, Department of Surgery at Aga Khan University Medical College, East Africa. He obtained his MBChB from the University of Sheffield in 2005 before becoming a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (MRCS) in 2009. Further advancing his expertise, he achieved Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (FRCS) in Trauma and Orthopedics in 2016 and completed his Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in 2017.

His key areas of interest include minimally invasive surgery of the knee, shoulder, hip, and elbow, as well as general trauma management. He is committed to utilizing advanced surgical techniques to improve patient outcomes and recovery.

Dr Baraza is a member of the General Medical Council (UK) and the Royal College of Surgeons of England, actively contributing to the field of orthopedic surgery through continuous learning, research, and professional collaboration.


Dr Parmenas Oroko

Assistant Professor​

Dr Oroko is an Assistant Professor, Department of Surgery at Aga Khan University Medical College, East Africa. He earned his MBChB from the University of Nairobi (UoN) in 1983 and later completed his Master of Medicine (MMed) in 1989. He further specialized in trauma and orthopedic surgery, attaining Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS Edin) in Trauma and Orthopedics in 1997, followed by an additional FRCS in Trauma and Orthopedics in 1998.

His primary areas of interest include joint reconstruction, specifically primary and revision hip and knee arthroplasty, as well as arthroscopic knee and shoulder surgery. He is also highly skilled in pelvic and acetabular reconstruction and has a strong passion for training and mentoring the next generation of orthopedic surgeons.

Dr Oroko is a Fellow of the British Orthopaedic Association, actively engaging in professional development, research, and advancements in orthopedic surgery.

Dr Mark Ben Lumbasi

Assistant Professor​

Dr Mark Ben Lumbasi is an Assistant Professor, Department of Surgery at Aga Khan University Medical College, East Africa. He earned his MBChB from the University of Nairobi, Kenya, in 2002 before advancing his expertise with a Higher Diploma and Fellowship in Orthopedic Surgery in South Africa in 2008. He further obtained the Fellowship of the College of Surgeons East, Central & Southern Africa (FCS Orthopaedic) through COSECSA in 2009. His pursuit of specialized training led him to complete a Fellowship in Spine Surgery and Arthroscopy at Assiut University, Egypt, in 2010, followed by a Fellowship in Revision Arthroplasty at Schulthess Klinik in Zurich, Switzerland, in 2017.

Dr Lumbasi has a strong focus on arthroplasty, arthroscopy, and spine surgery, with a commitment to providing advanced surgical care and improving patient outcomes in musculoskeletal health.

He is an active member of the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board (KMPDB) and the Kenya Orthopaedic Association (KOA). Additionally, he is affiliated with the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa (CMSA) and the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery, and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine (ISAKOS), contributing to the advancement of orthopedic surgery through research and professional collaboration.

 

Dr Shamshudin Mohammedali

Assistant Professor​

Dr Shamshudin Mohammedali is ​an Assistant Professor, Department of Surgery at Aga Khan University Medical College, East Africa. He earned his MBChB from the University of Nairobi (UoN) in 2005 and later completed his Master of Medicine (MMed) at Aga Khan University (AKU) in 2011. Furthering his specialization, he attained the Fellowship of the College of Orthopaedic Surgeons (FCOrth) in South Africa in 2016, along with a Higher Diploma in Orthopedics (HDip Orth) in 2015. He is also a Certified Independent Medical Examiner (CIME) accredited by the American Board of Independent Medical Examiners (ABIME) in 2016 and a Fellow of the Australian Orthopaedic Association (FAOrthA) in 2018.

Dr Mohammedali has a particular focus on upper limb, knee, and sports surgery, as well as reconstructive and replacement surgery. He also specializes in ankle and cartilage surgery, applying advanced surgical techniques to improve patient mobility and outcomes.

He is a member of the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board (KMPDB), the Kenya Orthopaedic Association (KOA), and the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa (CMSA). Additionally, he is affiliated with the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery, and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine (ISAKOS), contributing to research and advancements in orthopedic surgery.

Dr Stanley Mugambi

Assistant Professor

Dr Stanley Mugambi is an Assistant Professor, Department of Surgery at Aga Khan University Medical College, East Africa. He earned his MBChB from the University of Nairobi (UoN) in 2003 and went on to complete a Master of Medicine in Surgery (MMed Surg) at Aga Khan University (AKU) in 2009.

He further specialized in pediatric surgery, obtaining an MMed in Pediatric Surgery (MMed-PEDSURG) and a Fellowship in Pediatric Surgery (FCS-PEDSURG) from the University of Cape Town, South Africa, in 2014.

Dr Mugambi is a Fellow of the College of Pediatric Surgeons of South Africa and an active member of the Surgical Society of Kenya. In addition to his clinical work, he contributes to academic research as a reviewer for the Annals of African Surgery, playing a key role in advancing pediatric surgical knowledge in the region.

Senior Instructor​

Dr Ivan Seno Saruni is a Senior Instructor, Department of Surgery at Aga Khan University Medical College, East Africa. Dr Saruni obtained his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from the International Medical and Technological University, Tanzania, in 2010. He subsequently pursued postgraduate surgical training at the College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa (COSECSA), earning Membership in 2013 and Fellowship in 2016. In 2019, he undertook further professional development through the Doctor-to-Doctor Foundation at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, strengthening his clinical expertise and leadership in surgical care.

Dr Seno is actively involved in teaching, training, and mentorship of the next generation of surgeons and healthcare professionals. His professional interests include analytical thinking, effective communication, and team leadership, which he integrates into both clinical practice and surgical education.

He is a member of the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMP&DC), the College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa (COSECSA), and the Surgical Society of Kenya (SSK), through which he contributes to advancing surgical standards, education, and practice in the region.​​

Dr Fariha Fazal

Senior Instructor ​

Dr Fariha Fazal is a Senior Instructor, Department of Surgery at Aga Khan University Medical College, East Africa. She earned his MBBS from the University of Karachi, Pakistan, in 2006 and later completed a Master of Medicine in Pediatric Surgery (MMed) at the University of Nairobi in 2016. Furthering her specialization, she obtained the Fellowship of the European Board of Pediatric Surgery (F.E.B.P.S) from the European Union of Medical Specialists (E.U.M.S) in 2018 and a Master's in Healthcare Administration (MHA) from LSUS in 2024.

Her areas of interest include laparoscopic pediatric surgery, such as appendectomy, orchidopexy, pyeloplasty, and hernia repair, as well as daycare pediatric surgeries, including circumcisions and hernia repairs.

Dr Fazal is an active member of several esteemed professional organizations, including the Hypospadias International Society, the World Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons, the Kenya Association of Pediatric Surgeons, and the European Association of Pediatric Surgeons, where he is a fellow.

​Dr Esther Gathura

Senior Instructor

Dr Esther Gathura is a Senior Instructor, Department of Surgery at Aga Khan University Medical College, East Africa. He earned his MBBS from St. George's Hospital Medical School, University of London, in 2008, following the completion of a BSc in Anatomy (Intercalated) in 2006. Furthering her expertise, she obtained an MSc in Burn Care with Merit from Queen Mary, University of London, in 2014. In 2020, she achieved the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) in Plastic Surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

Her areas of interest include hand surgery, pediatric reconstructive surgery, reconstructive microsurgery, skin cancer surgery, and burn care. Dr Gathura is an esteemed Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons and is registered with the General Medical Council (UK).

 

Dr Ahmed Ali Ahmed

Professor

Dr Ahmed Ali Ahmed is an Assistant Professor, Department of Surgery at Aga Khan University Medical College, East Africa. He obtained his MBBCh from Cairo University in 1991 and later completed his Master of Medicine (MMed) at the same institution in 1997. He further specialized in urology, earning fellowships from the Egyptian Board of Urology (2003), the European Board of Urology under the European Board of Health Specialists in the Netherlands (2009), and the Arab Board of Urology under the Arab League for Health Specialists (2014). In 2019, he was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) in Urology in Ireland.

His areas of interest include general urology, endourology, infertility, laser surgery, and trauma emergencies. Dr Ahmed is an active member of several prestigious professional associations, including the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union (KMPDU), the European Urological Association (EAU), the General Egyptian Medical Syndicate, the Egyptian Urologic Association (EUA), the Arabic Urologic Association (AUA), the Saudi Council for Health Specialties (SCHS), and the Irish Medical Council (IMC).

​Dr Amadadin Alhlib

Senior Instructor

Dr Ahmed Ali Ahmed is a Senior Instructor, Department of Surgery at Aga Khan University Medical College, East Africa. He earned his MBBCh from the University of Almargeb, Libya, in 2007 before advancing his specialization in urology. He also has a keen focus on electronic health records and research.
