​Message from the Chair​​

I welcome you to the Department of Surgery, Dar es Salaam campus. The Department has well established surgical subspecialty services with state of art facility, advanced cutting edge technology. 

Our highly qualified team of academic faculty is dedicated to provide high level of tertiary care services and to fulfil the needs of local surgical capacity by educating the surgeon of the next generation through a high quality, competency based general surgery postgraduate training programme which started in 2016. 

We aim to train surgeons of tomorrow to be the legendary leaders for innovative and diverse surgical practice based on contemporary evidence based and technology in Tanzania and the region. 

In addition, we are committed to providing accessible, cost-effective, high-quality subspecialty surgical services and compassionate patient care to the people of the region and sub-Saharan Africa. Our focus is to ensure the quality is at the forefront of all our programmes and clinical services, providing work environment that recognizes excellence and proficiency of our surgical staff, continuous investment in staff development and modern technology and high end surgical services, enabling medical education research and partnering with public and private health care facilities.

The Department of Surgery service delivery model is based on the subspecialty surgical services which includes minimally invasive surgery, a pioneer in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Our approach is based on patient centred care in all surgical subspecialties, whereby we provide care that is respectful of, and responsive to, individual patient preference, needs and values, and ensuring that patient values guide all clinical decisions. Our professional faculty value the integrity of individual patient, their families with the helping relationship and shared decision making in surgical care.

I am excited about the future of surgery department in our phase two expansion to its new capacity with state of art operating theatres, surgical facility, modern technolohy and world class team of surgeons. We are unwavering in our goal to be a robust, vibrant and innovative department that will lead the surgical care and education in Tanzania and Africa.
