About Us

Welcome to the Department of Family Medicine, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. We take pride in being the first institution to offer training in Family Medicine in Tanzania from 2004.

Training is based at a not-for-profit hospital, Aga Khan Hospital, Dar es Salaam which strives to provide access to quality health care in Tanzania and East Africa. The hospital has set the standard for comprehensive healthcare and modern medical education. We are the only institution in Tanzania to receive Joint Commission International Accreditation (JCIA). Our highly qualified faculty who have been trained locally and internationally, residents and staff are tremendously dedicated and committed to family medicine education.

We have a history of recruiting excellent residents who are committed to primary care, in particular Family Medicine and the precepts of caring for people in their communities. We have had residents from Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda and Ghana among others! This brings together a group of enthusiastic residents that become colleagues in training.

From our administration, doctors and nurses; we have a dedicated team of personnel who enjoy working with family medicine residents and caring for our patients. They provide a great amount of support to the residents as they advance through our four-year programme. The Family Medicine programme at Aga Khan University, Medical College, East Africa in Dar es Salaam proud itself as a pioneer in training leaders in Family Medicine across the region.
