Postgraduate Medical Education

We offer rigorous specialist training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology leading to the award of Master of Medicine (MMed) degree. Our comprehensive four-year programme emphasises evidence-based reflective practice, self-directed learning, and graded acquisition of clinical skills and competencies. Core learning experiences of residents include but are not limited to:

  • Ambulatory Gynaecology and Infertility

  • Clinical Research and Public Health

  • Family Planning and Contraception

  • Feto-maternal Medicine

  • Gynaecological Endoscopy

  • Gynaecological Oncology

  • Infectious Diseases in Reproductive Health

  • Reproductive Biology, Pathology and Pharmacology

  • Urogynaecology

The outcome of the four year residency programme is a graduate who will be eligible for specialist recognition by the Kenya Medical Practitioners’ and Dentists’ Board after two years’ subsequent supervised practice. The graduate is equipped with the competencies and professional behaviors to support specialist practice.

Continuing Medical Education

We also provide continuous professional development teaching to technical staff and to the medical fraternity associated with Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi (AKUH,N). The weekly activities include clinical skills sessions together with the midwives, Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) - wide case-based learning sessions, geared to understanding of pathophysiology rather than management, weekly Continuing Medical Education (CME) lectures, and monthlydDepartmental perinatal and gynaecological mortality and morbidity discussions. There is a monthly departmental journal club and a ‘generic’ PGME journal club.

Periodically, basic surgical skills and laparoscopic workshops are conducted in collaboration with the Department of Surgery.

The Department has hosted a laparoscopic workshop with international faculty, building links with the University of Surrey programme in gynaecological endoscopy.

Residents, faculty and midwives undertake Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO) skills training and some are currently active trainers for ALSO and the RCOG Life Saving Skills programme.
