BRIDGE-Africa is an ambitious, multi-country initiative working to strengthen dementia research in Africa. The project focuses on Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD), aiming to close critical gaps by developing the scientific tools, infrastructure, and expertise needed for the region.
In Kenya, the project is led by the Brain and Mind Institute at Aga Khan University. BRIDGE-Africa’s approach is built on the idea that meaningful progress in dementia science requires solutions that are locally relevant and culturally appropriate. This means harmonizing research methods across countries, developing ways to better understand memory and thinking (cognitive phenotyping), examining the role of social factors that influence health, and responsibly collecting biological samples to inform future discoveries.
Through this work, BRIDGE-Africa is laying the foundation for long-term dementia research and healthier brain aging across East Africa.
