Introduction

Aga Khan University's (AKU) Department of Community Health Sciences (CHS) is a pre-eminent public health institution in the Country. The vision of the Chancellor set the direction for the University to take a lead in community development and the creation of an innovative curriculum that emphasizes a balance between patient care and population health. CHS has taken a major role in pursuing that over past several decades by leading the development of national level primary health care, public health practice, health systems through evidence based approach. CHS has established successful models in urban and rural settings in Pakistan emphasizing empowerment - building on the strengths of communities. As part of an international university, CHS collaborates in a global network of outstanding research and teaching institutions including AKU affiliates in East Africa and Central Asia.

CHS has five major units; Epidemiology & Biostatistics, Health Policy & Management, Population & Reproductive Health, Environmental Health, and Non Communicable Diseases & Mental Health. 

Aga Khan University invites application for the position of Associate Professor, Epidemiology & Biostatistics, Department of Community Health Sciences.

Responsibilities

Being a member of the Epidemiology & Biostatistics Unit, you will be responsible for:
  • establishing a research program in high risk populations with a focus on but not restricted to tackling the burden of disease in communicable diseases and managing outbreaks and epidemics
  • prioritizing areas for next two years in strengthening capacity in advanced analyses, to foster methodological approaches in different areas of epidemiological research
  • leading the development of developing grant proposals in areas related to estimating burden of diseases and risks factors with the aim of reducing these with emphasis on communicable disease prevention and control
  • developing and conducting educational/training programs for undergraduate, graduate, and post graduate students at the Aga Khan University 
  • developing continuing education programs and tailored educational program in communicable diseases and surveillance methods
  • advising and when needed leading the Master’s program in Epidemiology & Biostatistics which focuses on the teaching of Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Data management, Community Health, and Information technology, including the development of specialized tracks
  • collaborating with research scientists and key stakeholders, nationally and internationally, and promoting AKU as a center with high level expertise in public health.

Requirements

You should have:
  • PhD in a Public Health discipline with a preferable focus in Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases from a well reputed and HEC recognized University/Institution
  • 10-year teaching/research experience in the field of Epidemiology from a HEC recognized University or a post-graduate Institution with demonstrated professional accomplishment and evidence of publications and successful performance in grant writing, and scientific/public health research & development
  • good teaching skills and knowledge of new teaching methodologies and practices 
  • ability to communicate effectively both verbal and written in English and Urdu (applicable to the nationals only), however, command over other local/regional languages would be an advantage
  • good academic writing skills  
  • proficiency in use of related computer software packages
  • ability of building and promoting partnerships across the organization and beyond
  • good interpersonal skills and commitment to learning, growth, and self-development.
