Introduction

Salary range: £34,000 to £37,000 per annum pro rata

The Aga Khan University (International) in the United Kingdom is currently recruiting for a full-time Senior Coordinator, Publications. This role will manage the Institute’s publishing activities while also providing commissioning, editorial and project management expertise. The role will be responsible for strategically planning the Institute’s publishing programme together with the series editors and Head of Research, seeking new opportunities to publish and deliver high-quality academic titles.

Responsibilities

Main Duties:

Publishing 
  • Commission titles in line with the Institute’s Publishing Strategy as per targets agreed with the Head of Research.
  • Work closely with the Head of Research to set strategy, annual budgets and publishing schedules.
  • Assess proposals together with series editors to establish viability for publication.
  • Negotiate contractual terms with third parties, ensuring optimal terms are agreed.
  • Manage project schedules, budgets and production for the publishing programme.
  • Devise appropriate marketing strategies for each title in consultation with internal and external PR and Marketing teams.
  • Project management of individual publishing projects. 
  • Work closely with AKU-ISMC authors and experts as well as external authors, publishers, licensees, designers and printers.
  • Ensure content is checked for factual accuracy and for the appropriate use of the Institute’s name and brand.
  • Ensure images are copyright cleared and accurate records of rights and permissions are kept. 
  • Identify ideas suitable for books and proposals.
  • Oversee annual catalogue production.
  • International travel to 3-4 conferences annually in the UK and abroad to promote the Institute’s publications
Editorial
  • Provide editorial advice and support to authors and editors, ensuring that all text is checked for accuracy and adheres to house style and brand guidelines.
  • Copyedit text to be published in-house; proofread text before submission to publishers.
Financial & Support
  • Liaise with Head of Research regarding annual budgets and relevant phasing of income and expenditure.
  • Cost in-house titles to establish viability and manage budgets for project income and expenditure. 
  • Responsible for checking accuracy of monthly accounts.
  • Arrange royalty advances and payments to authors.
  • Oversee stock transfers to/from our distributor or co-publishers, monitor stock levels and sales figures.
  • Identify grants and funding opportunities and write grant applications to cover costs of publications.
  • Other duties as requested by line manager.

Requirements

Essential
  • Undergraduate degree
  • Proven experience of commissioning and project managing books.
  • Experienced editor, copy writer and proof-reader with an excellent standard of written English, with the ability to shape content for academic audiences.
  • Knowledge of book production process, experience of working directly with publishers.
  • Sound copyright knowledge.
  • Organised and able to prioritise a varied and demanding workload.
  • Numerate with excellent attention to detail.
  • A clear, assertive communicator at all levels. 
  • Knowledge and experience of using Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite.
Desirable
  • Degree in a related field.
  • Interest in the Institute’s mission and core subject areas.
