SONAM Leadership Team​​​​​

The Aga Khan University School of Nursing and Midwifery, AKU-SONAM, has moved to a new leadership structure to drive excellence in performance in strategic areas including teaching/learning, research, clinical practice, outreach and innovation​. Our leadership team includes the Dean, two Associate Deans, ​​three Assistant Deans and six clinical stream heads, who focus on the School’s four core activities - research, education, clinical services and outreach.​​​

Dr Salimah R. Walani, PhD, MPH, MSN, RN​ ​​​
Dean

Dr Salimah Walani is the Dean of the Aga Khan University (AKU) School of Nursing and Midwifery, Pakistan. Dr Walani has extensive global health experience. Before joining AKU in August 2024, Dr Walani was Global Policy and Advocacy Advisor at MiracleFeet – a US-based not-for-profit organisation with programmes in 35 countries. Prior to that, she was Vice President of Global Programmes at March of Dimes Foundation, USA, where she led the organisation's maternal and Newborn health partnerships in low- and middle-income countries. 

In addition to these positions, she has held leadership, advisory, and consultative roles with notable organisations such as the New York City Department of Health, the World Health Organization and New York University, among others.

Originally from Pakistan, Salimah Walani graduated from Aga Khan University School of Nursing in 1987 and subsequently pursued a Master of Science in Nursing from Simmons University, Boston, a Master of Public Health from Harvard University, and a PhD from New York University.  

Dr. Walani is well-known for her advocacy for the global birth defects agenda. In 2014 she helped develop a partnership for the launch of the World Birth Defects Day. She has served on several maternal and newborn health technical advisory groups and is an honorary member of the International Clearinghouse for Birth Defects Surveillance and Research.

Dr Rubina Barolia
Professor & Associate Dean, Undergraduate Nursing Education​

Dr Barolia brings over 35 years of experience in clinical practice, education and academic leadership. She has led programme development across several countries and is known for her work in non-communicable disease prevention and evidence-based practice. As Associate Dean, Dr Barolia leads our undergraduate nursing and midwifery programmes, ensuring academic quality and innovation in teaching, while advancing student and faculty development and potential. 

Dr Barolia completed her BScN and Masters in Nursing from AKU School of Nursing and Midwifery, Pakistan and obtained a PhD in Nursing from the University of Alberta, Canada. She has served in clinical and administrative positions at the Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) and SONAM, P. She has also worked on developing Master's Programme in Pakistan, Syria and East Africa. Dr Barolia received a doctoral fellowship from the International Development Research Centre, Ottawa, Canada; the Betty Ford Medical Award, California, USA; and the Adult Health award from AKU.​

​Dr Laila Ladak
Associate Professor &​ ​Associate Dean, Research and Graduate Education

Dr Ladak brings over 20 years of experience in nursing education, research, and leadership. She is recognized for her work in long-term and patient-reported outcomes in individuals with chronic conditions and their families and has made significant contributions in advancing SONAM, P’s Masters and PhD programmes. As Associate Dean, Dr Ladak advances SONAM, P’s research agenda and oversees the Masters and PhD in Nursing Programmes.

Dr Ladak holds BScN and Masters in Nursing from AKU School of Nursing and Midwifery, Pakistan and obtained a PhD in Nursing from the University of Sydney, Australia.
She also serves as Section Editor, Nursing and Midwifery, PLOS Global Public Health journal, and editorial board member, Journal of Pediatrics Nursing. She is the Chair, Global Health, International Society of Congenital Heart Disease, ISACHD.

​Dr Saleema Gulzar
Associate Professor​ & Associate Dean, Outreach and Partnerships

Dr Gulzar, a seasoned public health professional and researcher with over 30 years of experience, is known for pioneering school health programmes using digital solutions. She has contributed to projects across South Asia. As Associate Dean, she oversees SONAM, P’s engagement with regulatory bodies, partners, and alumni, while advancing the school’s visibility, image, and national leadership through collaborative initiatives.

Dr Gulzar holds a PhD in Nursing from the University of Sydney, MScN and Post-RN BScN from AKU School of Nursing and Midwifery, Pakistan. She has led impactful collaborations with institutions such as BRAC Bangladesh, Kabul Medical University, and WHO Collaborating Centres. Beyond her formal roles, Dr Gulzar serves as Secretary of the eHealth Association of Pakistan and Chairperson of the Aga Khan Health Board (Southern Region). ​
