His academic and research interests span gastrointestinal oncology, hepatobiliary / pancreatic surgery and medical education. He has also published extensively, building a strong portfolio that has influenced both practice and policy in surgical care. He is also an active member of several professional associations, including the International and Asia-Pacific Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Associations, the Society of Laparo Endoscopic Surgeons, and the Society of Surgeons of Pakistan. His commitment to his field has been recognized with multiple awards, including the Physician Leader Award of the Year (2024) presented by Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education – International (ACGME-I) USA, and University Award of Excellence in Teaching (2025) as well as the Outstanding Teacher Award (2012) presented by the Aga Khan University, Karachi.
Reflecting on this milestone, Dr Khan said: “I am deeply honored to be elected as a Council Member of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, an institution with a remarkable history in the advancement of surgery as a profession across the globe over 5 centuries. As a surgical faculty from AKU and Pakistan, this appointment is both humbling and inspiring. I see it as an opportunity to strengthen ties, bring greater support, recognition and visibility to the surgeons and trainees in our region, and contribute to advancing surgical education and standards of care globally.”
His election marks an important step in strengthening Pakistan’s representation in global surgical bodies and highlights the contributions of AKU’s faculty on international platforms.
