Dr Zulfiqar A. Bhutta, Founding Director of the Institute for Global Health and Development (IGHD) at Aga Khan University and Co-Director of the SickKids Centre for Global Child Health, has been awarded the International Pediatric Association (IPA) Lifetime Achievement Award, recognizing his decades of service and leadership in global maternal, newborn, and child health.
The award was presented during a special ceremony at the 31st IPA Congress held in May 2025 in Mexico City.
“It is an incredible honour to receive this recognition from the International Pediatric Association," said Dr Bhutta. “This award reflects the collective mission we share as paediatricians and public health professionals to improve the lives of children everywhere."
Dr Bhutta's research has shaped major global health guidelines and informed national policies across low- and middle-income countries. His leadership spans decades, including his service as President of the IPA (2016–2019) and Treasurer (2007–2013). He continues to serve as Chair of the IPA Working Group on School-Age Children.
His work has been foundational in advancing equity-focused health systems, scaling up community-based interventions, and strengthening maternal and child health outcomes across South Asia, sub-Saharan Africa, and beyond.
In addition to this award, Dr Bhutta has been recognized globally for his contributions—including receiving the John Dirks Canada Gairdner Global Health Award, Pakistan's Sitara-e-Imtiaz, and his appointment as an Officer of the Order of Canada.
