The Network of Quality, Teaching and Learning (QTL_net) offered their 9th Teaching and Learning Enhancement Workshop (TLEW) from March 11th to 13th, 2020 at the School of Nursing and Midwifery (SONAM) in Nairobi, Kenya. Twenty-nine (29) faculty members from different disciplines across AKU Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda attended the workshop with a common goal to enhance their competence and confidence as facilitators of learning and engage in reflective sessions on their teaching practices.
“I believe TLEW workshop was very educative. It equipped me with the ability to reflect on my teaching” said Loise Nyambura Ndirangu, Instructor at School of Nursing and Midwifery (SONAM), at AKU, Kenya. The three-day peer-led workshop provided participants an opportunity to openly experiment with ‘new’ teaching and learning techniques in a safe learning environment. Each day began with participants engaging in a large group session before breaking out into smaller groups where they presented their mini-lessons and received feedback from their peers. “I have now met and seen non-teachers who are real teachers…I have personally benefitted from their feedback and look forward to improving my teaching and sharing with my colleagues” said Winston Edward Massam, Assistant Professor at the Institute for Educational Development (IED) at AKU, Tanzania.
By the end of the workshop, participants felt prepared and demonstrated their willingness and motivation to apply their workshop learning in their classrooms. A participant wrote in their post-workshop evaluation, “This training has molded me into a different facilitator/teacher of knowledge. Teaching is now a lot different from what it seemed like. I feel more confident about my teaching skills”.
