Tanzania’s Minister of Education Hon. Joyce Ndalichako will be the chief guest at the forthcoming Fifth Africa Regional Congress of the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction (ICMI) on Mathematical Education (AFRICME), which will be held between August 29and 31 at the Institute for Educational Development East Africa in Dar es Salaam.
Focused on the theme of Quality Mathematics Education for All, the keynote speech at the event will be delivered by eminent scholar and professor in mathematics education Dr Barbara Jaworski. Dr Jaworski is the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Mathematics Teacher Education and current president of the International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education (PME).
Dr Jaworski has a career that covers mathematics teaching at secondary level and first-year university level, teacher education at secondary level, and teaching and supervision of doctoral students. Her research is focused on the development of mathematics teaching through research and through partnerships between teachers and teacher educators at a range of levels.
Dr Jean-Luc Dorier (University of Geneva) and Dr Anthony Essien (University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa) will be chairing sessions at the symposia which will explore how graduate programmes can help create a research community, and the impact of digital technology on the publishing industry. The conference will include keynote lectures, panel and round table discussion, paper presentations, workshops, East Africa presentations and displays of local teaching learning materials and posters.
Organised by the Aga Khan University (AKU) Institute for Educational Development East Africa (IED), in collaboration with the ICMI, the conference aims to promote the exchange of ideas on approaches to achieve quality mathematics education within Africa and beyond and to encourage collaborative research in quality mathematics education at all levels.
Participants will include mathematicians, mathematics educators, teacher educators, teachers, students, curriculum developers, school inspectors, policymakers, researchers, and those involved in the teaching and learning of mathematics.
