The Aga Khan University is proud to announce the appointment of Dr Tashmin Khamis, the Founding Director of AKU’s Networks of Quality Assurance and Improvement (QAI_net) and Teaching and Learning (TL_net), as a member of the international judging panel for the UK-based Higher Education Academy’s Global Teaching Excellence Award.
The Higher Education Academy (HEA) recently launched the Global Teaching Excellence Award that will exclusively focus on identifying and recognising higher education institutions that are delivering world-class teaching and learning strategies in support of student success.
Dr Khamis said, “I am humbled by this opportunity to work with such a high-profile panel and I look forward to learning lessons that can inform the teaching awards structure and processes at AKU and for our upcoming Teaching Academy. This appointment is evidence of AKU’s commitment to faculty education development and to a student centred learning experience.”
The high-profile panel is chaired by Svava Bjarnason, former Principal Education Specialist at the International Finance Corporation, the private sector arm of the World Bank Group. AKU recently became a strategic partner of the HEA, and is the first university partner of the HEA in the developing world. This will allow faculty to gain HEA fellowships that recognize good teaching practice.
“The recently approved AKU Teaching Academy will be one of the ways of recognizing good teachers and elevating education as a key activity of the faculty. Through the HEA fellowship structure TL_net will develop a pool of teaching experts on campus who can mentor other faculty to ensure that teaching standards are maintained across the University,” Dr Khamis added.
In the past two years 45 per cent of AKU’s teaching faculty have accessed TL_net services with a 90 per cent return rate. In addition, a third of AKU’s programmes have undergone cyclical review and at least 10 per cent of faculty have been through AKU’s first compulsory Teaching and Learning Enhancement Workshop. This is testimony to the quality culture AKU espouses to.
