Twenty-seven Academic Supervisors and Senior Government Officials from the Ministry of Education, Afghanistan attended a two-week tailor made continuing professional education programme "effective academic supervision" at the Aga Khan University Institute for Educational Development, Pakistan. The purpose of this programme was to enable the officials enhance the performance of teachers in their jurisdiction schools through systematic classroom observations, providing focused and constructive feedback to improve teaching, learning and assessment practices to augment students learning outcomes.
During the course of the study, the participants critically analysed their current responsibilities as academic supervisors and reconceptualised their roles as effective pedagogical leaders while exploring alternate models of academic supervision and development. They learnt about the notion and various kinds of educational change and the role of supervisor in managing change. Engaging sessions were conducted to deepen the participants’ understanding of the philosophy of classroom observation and feedback processes and issues related to curriculum, syllabus, textbooks, teaching, learning and assessment.
“All the topics discussed during the workshop were relevant, useful and interesting. By using this new knowledge gained at IED, I can improve my performance at work”, said Njibullah Montahez, a course participant.
“We learnt new methods/techniques of academic supervision and observed those methods being implemented in IED supported schools”, noted another participant.
The supervisors and officials were also taken to different schools in Karachi to help them observe effective supervision and management techniques in action.
By the end of the programme, using their newly learnt strategies, the participants formulated their own school development plans for implementation in their respective jurisdictions in Afghanistan.
