    Department for Educational Development

The Department for Educational Development (DED), Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS), aspires to emerge as a Centre of excellence in Health Professions Education (HPE) in the region. It is a resource for FHS, Aga Khan University (AKU) and other national and international institutions. DED strives to achieve this by introducing philosophical underpinnings and promoting excellence in undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate education through academic programmes, courses and other faculty development initiatives. The department promotes innovative curricula, technology enhanced learning, excellence in assessment, and creating a conducive learning environment. DED takes pride in spearheading continuous improvement of educational programmes and systems through quality assurance and periodic evaluation. It also conducts, encourages and disseminates research in HPE.

DED plays a pivotal role in assuring and enhancing the quality of education at the faculty of health sciences through its presence and participation on key educational committees at medical college and school of nursing and midwifery. On these committees DED faculty is a guiding resource for the curriculum including learning outcomes, sequencing of content, most appropriate teaching, learning, assessment and feedback strategies, and programme evaluation. The department is also instrumental in developing learning resources (such as standardized patient bank, library of images), CIME and student support systems.

The Examination Cell is an integral division of DED and helps to conduct and analyze AKU-Medical College (AKU-MC) Undergraduate (UG) and Postgraduate (PG), and School of Nursing and Midwifery (SONAM) and some Allied Health examinations. Similarly the Question Bank is a central bank and stores questions that have been reviewed and accepted by the content experts and DED faculty and allows faculty to design a high quality examination paper according to the objectives and Table of Specifications (TOS) for the examinations. For the assurance of quality in assessment DED conducts Pre-hoc and Post Hoc of all the undergraduate and post graduate examinations.

From the day of its conception DED has played a key role in creating an environment at AKU in which Health Professionals Education is valued as an integral and essential component of the academic mission of FHS. The Master of Health Professions Education programme (MHPE) offered by DED aims to develop educators, researchers and leaders in HPE.
