Continuing Education Programme
Across the developing world, managers and mid-level professionals engaged in health and social development sectors are faced with complex administrative and organizational challenges related to planning, implementation and evaluation of programmes and projects. In Pakistan, there are only a few community-oriented, problem-focused and pragmatic professional training and capacity building programmes that can provide these professionals with the conceptual knowledge, professional skills and technical expertise to effectively address complex operational issues.
The Continuing Education Programme is a response by the Department of Community Health Sciences at Aga Khan University, to address this critical need of Pakistan and other countries in the region. The programme began in 1994 and offers short courses, ranging from 6 to 20 days in duration. Over the last 25 years, it has trained 4518 national and international health and development professionals in core, on-request, grant-based, and follow-up training courses. These courses have been conducted both within and outside Pakistan.
Over the years, there has been an increasing participation of international candidates from developing countries including Kenya, Tanzania, Tajikistan, Sudan, Syria, and Afghanistan. There has also been an increase in enrollment from government agencies, and other NGOs working in Pakistan.
Goal
The overall goal of the Continuing Education Programme is to contribute to professional excellence in the health sector through the provision of short courses that develop personal and organisational capacity to effectively assess and address inequities in health and social determinants of health.
This programme is particularly useful for mid-level health and development workers, managers, researchers and planners working at different levels in government, NGOs, and international agencies. It is designed to benefit the participants, their parent organisations, programmes and the target populations they serve.
