Elective Placement Application – Aga Khan University

Important:Candidates should be nominated by the home Institution’s Dean or Registrar only. Independent/individual applications will not be accepted.

  • Nomination must be received on the institution’s letterhead, signed and stamped on template provided Verification from Institution Form- Elective
  • Nominations will be accepted from candidates who are enrolled at WHO accredited and PMDC recognized Institutions only.
  • A completed application should be submitted three months prior to the request for an elective placement to elective.national@aku.edu

Note: Students who have already written their final year professional examinations are  not eligible to apply for an elective placement.

An Institution may nominate more than one student.

A submission does not guarantee confirmation of elective placement.

Elective Application Process

  1. Students who are nominated and have completed verifiable form, will receive an elective ID and verification code to view the application. The application process must be completed at least three months prior to the month in which an elective rotation is requested. (See appended calendar)
  2. The completed Verification Form must also be uploaded on the online portal to complete the Application for the elective placement.
  3. The AKU offers elective placements at the beginning of the calendar month.
  4. A nominated student from Pakistan may complete an electives placement once at AKU for a period of four weeks.
  5. A student nominated from overseas may opt for an elective for up to Six to Eight weeks during his/her formal academic career in a Medical/Physiotherapy/Allied Health Sciences Programme.

Students must have:

Students with no resit or repeat having achieved the following may apply (as applicable)

  • With an equivalent average of 3.0 cGPA or at least 70% in the semester examination.
  • An overall aggregate of 70% in Professional examinations.

A. Students studying in A-Levels or High School, who wish to acquire such experience at AKU may only apply for:

Accommodation & Registration Info

Important Note:

  • Students applying from outstation should note that hostel accommodation is limited and may not always be available. The University-managed hostels offer non-air-conditioned, single, and shared, furnished room accommodation with communal washroom and laundry facilities. Students pay for their living expenses in Pakistani currency. The room rent for the year 2025 is Rs 37,000/- per month for national students and US$ 360/- per month for overseas students. Food, which may be purchased from the cafeteria, may cost up to Rs. 1500/- per day.
  • At registration, the student will be provided an Identity card for the duration of the elective placement. In case of misplacement, Rs. 300 will be charged for its reissuance.
  • Health care facilities are available in the Aga Khan University Hospital on a self-payment basis.
  • Students must follow all the rules and regulations of Aga Khan University. The University is not responsible or liable for any mishap or harm that may be caused directly or indirectly, on or off the University premises while the student is on the elective placement. Students must also follow the Student Anti-Harassment Policy and Student Code of Conduct.

All students must follow AKU policies. AKU is not liable for incidents on or off campus.

Upon Selection:

  • Upon being selected by the department, the Elective Office will confirm your placement via email three weeks before the placement. Upon receiving our offer of acceptance, you must complete and submit the additional requirements outlined below. You must submit additional forms through a reliable courier service.
  • If we are not able to offer you placement, you will be notified via email. Please do not call us or visit us in person.
  • To confirm your elective placement at AKU, a Non-refundable registration fee of Rs. 4,000/- (applicable for national students) is required via online transfer.

  • Submit duly filled and signed ID Card Form.
  • Duly filled and signed Hostel Accommodation Form (if applicable).
  • At the conclusion of the elective rotation, an evaluation will be provided upon receipt of clearance from the department. The University reserves the right not to provide an evaluation in cases where the elective student does not complete the elective to the satisfaction of the Department.
