    Out of School Children

Out of all 5-16 year olds in Pakistan, 32% are currently out of school. A greater proportion of girls is out of school nationally and across all four provinces; more than half of 5-16 year old girls in Balochistan and Sindh are not attending school.  Poverty, socio-cultural norms, and unavailability of schools hinder access of the most marginalized children, including girls. These along with the absence of basic facilities, poor quality education, and inequitable learning opportunities in schools also contribute to the ever-declining retention and completion rates, especially during pandemic times.

On February 22-23, 2022, a conference on OOSC was organized for collective reflection and dialogue to devise workable strategies to address this formidable national challenge and bring attention to it. The conference findings have been presented as a comprehensive report and a conference brief. A series of seminars have continued the discourse generated during the conference on what works and why for ensuring OOSC's access to education. The conference deliberations also highlighted the need for developing a repository of contextually relevant resources on the education of OOSC. The repository is expected to expand gradually as we receive more resources.

    A Second Chance at School

Low literacy levels and large numbers of out-of-school children in Pakistan call for an alternative approach to education. This non-formal basic education progamme is giving such children a way back into the mainstream schooling system.
