    Introduction

    Zoya Sameen is an Assistant Professor of History in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Aga Khan University. She is a historian of gender, law, and empire in nineteenth- and twentieth-century South Asia. Her current book project examines the defiant responses of Indian and European women to legal regimes of policing prostitution from the late nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century in colonial India. Her research interests also include writing South Asian history in transnational perspective and understanding gender history at the intersection of law, technology, and environment. Prior to joining Aga Khan University, she taught for two years as a Postdoctoral Teaching Fellow at the University of Chicago from where she also received her PhD in History.
