Looking ahead in malaria: R21/Matrix M, an exciting new vaccine​ ​candidate

Meet our speaker​

Mehreen Datoo trained at Guy’s, King’s and St Thomas’ Medical School, undertook a BSc in International Health at the University of Leeds, and a Diploma in Tropical Medicine at the London School of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. Before joining the Jenner Institute at the University of Oxford, she did her core medical training at Oxford and has a special interest in infectious diseases, predominantly malaria. She also has clinical experience of working in low-income contexts across Africa.

Mehreen has w​orked with Professor Adrian Hill for four years on malaria and​ Ebola clinical trials and is currently in the 3rd year of her DPhil. She is the lead UK clinician working on the clinical development of the malaria vaccine R21/Matrix-M and evaluating its safety and efficacy.

More recently during the pandemic, Mehreen worked on the COVID-19 vaccine trials with the University of Oxford and returned to clinical service. Mehreen is due to start an Academic Clinical Fellowship in Infectious Diseases and Microbiology at Oxford later this year.​​​​
