Aga Khan University, chartered in 1983 as Pakistan's first private international university, is committed to the provision of education, research and health care of international standard relevant to Pakistan and the region. The affiliated Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) has well-equipped investigative services and provides state-of-the-art clinical facilities. AKUH is the first hospital in Pakistan to be awarded the prestigious Joint Commission International Accreditation (JCIA) for practicing the highest internationally-recognized healthcare standards.
The Department of Surgery provides comprehensive and sub-specialty care in the areas of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Dental-Oral, Maxillo-Facial Surgery, General Surgery, Breast Surgery, Neurosurgery, Orthopaedic Surgery, Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, Paediatric Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Urology and Vascular Surgery. The Department has 113 full-time and part-time faculty with a strong commitment towards teaching and research. Formal structured undergraduate teaching, postgraduate residency and fellowship programmes are integrated into the academic functions of the department.
The Section of Orthopaedic Surgery has grown like the institution and Department. It has 11 full-time and 01 Part-time faculty. The development of subspecialty interests has helped to establish multiple programs within the section that have enhanced volumes. These include specialty clinics in joint replacement (arthroplasty), sports medicine, foot and ankle, oncology, hand surgery, pediatric orthopaedics, spine/scoliosis, Ilizarov procedure, and others.
The Section has a long history of being deeply involved in education at all levels. It has continued to enhance its presence internally and externally in Pakistan and the region. Orthopedics CME workshops and conferences are the most sought academic events for learning new techniques and sharing knowledge and research within and external trainees and faculties.
The Section also participates in basic and clinical research efforts that have successfully generated collaborative grants, publications, and presentations at national and international meetings. The robust clinical work has allowed the sectional faculty to publish many manuscripts and work on grants over the years, which have helped establish orthopaedics at the national and regional levels while enhancing the faculty's reputation as leading academicians.
