The Department is a newly formed vibrant identity for ophthalmology at AKU poised to deliver subspecialized and multidisciplinary services integrated with an enabling environment that supports outstanding teaching/learning, research, partnerships, and leadership development.
Current Faculty work closely with a team of over 40 specialized medical staff, nurses, optometrists, technicians, technologists and others to offer comprehensive eye care for adults and children. These include but are not limited to surgery for cataract, corneal transplant, retinal disorders, glaucoma, orbital and facial reconstruction, refractive, squint, and ophthalmic tumors. Most of these services are delivered through the outpatient consulting clinics and/or day care surgery. There is a highly enabling environment for interdepartmental collaborations to support education including with the Department of Education, CIME, AKU Examination Board and the Institute for Educationalal Development.
Fostering excellence in education, scholarship in education and professional development of Faculty are major strategic priorities for the Department. We currently organize a one month rotation for medical students and have a four year residency program. We require support to shift the curriculum for our residency program to competency based medical education at a level that will support ACGME accreditation, to assist faculty in enhancing their teaching and learning, and to support development of new programs including clinical and research fellowships as well as allied health training.
