The Brain and Mind Institute (BMI) is a newly minted entity at the Aga Khan University (AKU), with key hubs in Nairobi (for East Africa) and Karachi (for South and Central Asia). The BMI seeks to build capacity in the domains of mental health and neuroscience. In collaboration with partners, the Institute is advancing research leadership capacity and support service delivery across East Africa and South Asia, and other regions served by the AKU. The Institute supports a hub for scholarship exchange and action on mental health issues, as well as educational, clinical, and community-based programs. BMI’s research focuses on the context of today’s youth in Africa and South Asia, while our programmatic offerings address mental health related and brain health issues, including stigma and resiliency. A significant area of interest is the implementation of science-based programming in hospital and community settings that translate new discoveries into prevention and treatment programs.

Job Summary
Working with a team with hubs in Kenya (for East Africa) and Pakistan (for South Asia) and other locations globally, this position is responsible for managing, designing, developing, coordinating, and conducting the Institute’s (in person and virtual) trainings including, but not limited to, Mental Health First Aid (MHFA), Mental health ambassadorship programmes and other related disciplines. The candidate will also help foster collaborative research with the AKU’s Cancer Centre. The ideal candidate will have experience with various training methods, including on-the-job coaching, mentorship programmes, training of trainers, e-learning; as well as research coordination.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and conduct needs assessments that determines what types of training should be provided for each target group in line with BMI’s strategy and programmes
  • Tailor/develop training courses/programmes based on needs assessments, including but not limited to Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) and Mental Health Ambassador CourseMapping out training strategies and assist the Institute with the building of training plans and schedules for all types of training requests 
  • Coordinate all logistics associated with organizing and delivery of training courses/programmes  
  • Ensure appropriate monitoring, documentation and evaluation of the training activities and measure the impact of the training programmes
  • Generate, interpret, analyse, and communicate trainings' results using training beneficiary tracking forms and other management tools, graphs, and reports as well as produce narrative and financial reports on the training activities
  • Contribute to the identification of sources of funding as well as development of fundraising proposals in line with BMI’s training strategy
  • Assist in coordinating research programmes done jointly with the Cancer Centre (Including Clinical Trials Unit) aimed at screening cancer patients for mental illness at screening, during and after treatment of cancer, as well as contribute to implementation of programmes jointly developed with St Margaret’s Hospital

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree (Masters degree preferred) from an accredited University in Education, Communications, Public Health, Social Work or closely related discipline
  • Licensed mental health provider and a Certified Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) instructor with current certificate
  • At least 3 years of experience as a training instructor with English and Urdu as the language of delivery 
  • Experience providing MHFA training, educating laymen and conducting Training of Trainers 
  • Experience organizing workshops, seminars, webinars, or similar functions
  • Knowledge of traditional and non-traditional training methods and techniques
  • Knowledgeable about learning management systems, instructional design, and e-learning platforms
  • Ability to transfer knowledge to the audience with various learning styles
  • Ability to take a collaborative, team-oriented approach
