Introduction

The Aga Khan University School of Nursing and Midwifery (SONAM) in Uganda is a vibrant academic community dedicated to the provision of transformational learning, teaching and research that makes a leading contribution to improving the health and well-being of communities. Teaching faculty are all engaged in active clinical practice, research, and professional leadership with a specialty focus on delivery of upgrade programmes for working nurses and midwives and Master’s in advanced Practice Nursing and Advanced Practice Midwifery with plans to commence a generic Bachelor of Science in Nursing in a couple of years.   

Responsibilities

Job Summary
The School is recruiting a suitably qualified and experienced academic Senior Instructor (Lecturer) who will be based at SONAM’s campus in Kampala, Uganda. S/he will be required to teach in the selected courses within SONAM’s accredited nursing, midwifery, continue professional development programmes, participate in research activities, serve in the University’s academic committees, participate in multidisciplinary activities and ensure professional/academic productivity within the School of Nursing & Midwifery (SONAM).

The Faculty Midwifery will be responsible for:
  • Teaching and learning of courses with SONAM’s accredited nursing, midwifery and continuing professional development programmes
  • Actively contributing to the body of nursing and midwifery knowledge through engaging in research, grant writing and publication 
  • Providing support as faculty advisors to students enrolled in various programmes at SONAM in academic, professional, and social welfare issues
  • Working in collaboration with AKU entities, partners, and stakeholders
  • Engaging in mentorship of undergraduate and graduate students
  • Maintaining his/her own continuous professional development to enhance scholarship of teaching and learning, clinical expertise, research, and leadership
  • Engaging in the student recruitment and convocation processes 


Requirements

  • Must be a PhD holder and possess a Masters degree in Nursing or Midwifery
  • Must have a valid practicing license and current BLS certificate 
  • Must be registered with the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council, as a midwife, or eligible for registration. 
  • Should have 4 years’ experience in higher education
  • Must have  at least four publication points as stipulated by the commission of university education for Uganda.
  • Should have evidence of teaching, training or qualification i.e. Post graduate diploma in medical education
  • Must demonstrate expertise in modern pedagogy and scholarship of learning. 
  • Must possess good communication skills and be clinically active.
