Introduction

The Medical College offers 4-year Master of Medicine degrees in anaesthesia, family medicine, medicine, obstetrics & gynaecology, paediatrics, pathology, radiology, and surgery.

Currently the University offers fellowship programmes in: - Cardiology, Infectious Diseases, Neonatology and Paediatric Neurology.
 

Responsibilities

The Gastroenterologist will undertake clinical and educational functions under the supervision of the Section Head under whom he/she would be deployed. In this role, the Gastroenterologist admits, consults and undertakes diagnosis and treatment of patients admitted under the University team or private admitting doctors. He/she may prescribe or request certain tests or perform certain procedures without supervision but should consult and involve other relevant specialties for more complex diagnostic or management issues. As the admitting doctor the Gastroenterologist ultimately determines what direct management is provided to patients admitted under Him / Her and provides appropriate supervision for all cadres of doctors and nurses involved in care.

  • Assess and manage patients.
  • Attend to emergency cases.
  • Educate patients on wellness, prevention and early detection of risk factors for disease(s) and provide resources and referrals to patients, family members/care givers.
  • Liaise with consultants and various departments to provide multidisciplinary input into care as required.
  • Avail required support services in the process of treating patients; particularly when referred by other specialists to the Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi
  • Initiate the review and development of appropriate policies and procedures for patients’ health care to formulate best practice guidelines.
  • Participate in the meticulous use of resources to enable patient safety and quality care.
  • Participate in departmental research and academic activities, institutional quality improvement and patient safety activities.
  • Perform other duties as may be assigned by section head and department chair.
  • Participate in departmental call duties 
  • Co-author in at least one submitted manuscript in a peer review journal per year
  • Provide appropriate professional leadership commensurate with level of responsibility and training.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) or equivalent
  • Master of medicine in Paediatrics
  • Certified and verifiable training in Gastroenterology from a recognized University
  • Eligible for registration by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board
  • Good communication skills
