Introduction

The Aga Khan University (AKU) is a private, international university committed to international standards of excellence, in teaching, research and service. The affiliated, Joint Commission International accredited, Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) has well equipped investigative services and provides state-of-the-art clinical facilities. 

Department of Surgery is comprised of eleven (11) sections (Breast Surgery, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Dentistry, ENT - Head & Neck Surgery, Neurosurgery, Orthopaedics, Ophthalmology, Paediatric Surgery, Urology, Vascular Surgery and General Surgery this includes Plastic Surgery as well). Top priority of the Department is to ensure the highest level of educational experiences for medical students, interns, residents, and fellows through our clerkship, internship, residency and fellowship programmes respectively. Our twelve (12) residency programmes and seven (7) fellowship programmes are accredited by the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Pakistan. Graduates from our residency programmes are commonly accepted in national and international sub-specialty fellowships, and many pursue a career in academic surgery or as clinical leaders in community hospitals. 

We are a leading research Institute in the Country. The Department strives to be on the forefront of epidemiological and clinical research. We work towards the mission by integrating education and research with clinical services, entailing a full range of surgical treatments including cutting-edge techniques, minimally invasive surgery and state-of-the-art procedures. Our focus is mainly on indigenous problems and on innovations to improve surgical access in developing countries. We constantly invest in a process of continual development of research capacity and infrastructure, and our faculty members have commendable research profiles including research grants and publications. Additionally, Department of Surgery has a long lasting tradition of providing research support to the Clinical and Biological Sciences streams of the AKU-FHS PhD programme. 

In the context of academic pursuits, Department of Surgery has organized six (6) annual conferences to date. Topics covered in the past six conferences include: Surgical Complications, Surgical Innovations for the Developing World, Surgical Oncology, Global Surgery, Trauma and Surgical Education & Training.

Responsibilities

The Chair will provide dynamic academic leadership to the department and will have an overall responsibility for the fulfilment of its research, academic and service mandate, consistent with the mission and vision of AKU and AKUH. The Chair will be responsible for developing and implementing a strategic vision for the department, fostering a strong research culture, nurturing learning, and training across programmatic levels, supporting, and developing faculty, and partnering with stakeholders to meet the departmental overall mandate.

Requirements

  • Eligible applicants must have MBBS/MD with postgraduate certification (FCPS, FRCS, Diplomate of American Board of Surgery or equivalent qualification).
  • Candidates with an academic rank of Associate Professor or Professor who are seasoned administrators and have a well-established track record of leadership are encouraged to apply.
  • Applicants with high productivity and experience in research funding and publications, teaching, training and clinical service delivery, evidence of engaging teams and balancing multiple organizational priorities will be considered.
